I have never understood why we keep a garden and why over 36 years ago when I bought my first hou in the country, I started digging up a patch for vegetables before doing anything el. When you think how easy and cheap, relatively,(相对的)it is to buy a bunch(群)of carrots or beets(甜菜), why rai them? And root crops especially are hard to tell apart,(区分,分辨) when store-bought, from our own. There is a human instinct(天性)at work here, a kind of back-breaking(使人精疲力尽的)make-believe(伪装的)that has no reality. Besides, I don't particularly like eating vegetables. I'd much rather eat something juicy and fat. Like hot dogs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, if you could rai hot dogs outside your window, you'd really have something you could justify(证明)without a cond's hesitation. As it is, though, I cannot deny that when April comes I find mylf going out to lean(依靠)on the fence and look at that mirable(卑鄙的)plot(密谋)of land, resolving(解析,分辨)with all my rational(理性地)powers not to plant it again. But inevitably(不可避免的)a morning arrives when, just as I am awakening, a scent(气味)wafts(飘荡)through the window, something like earth-as-air, a scent that ems to come up from the very center of this planet. And the sun means business(事情), suddenly, and has a different, deeper yellow in its beams(光线,电波)on the carpet(地毯). The birds begin screaming hysterically(歇斯底里的), thinking what I am thinking—the worms (蠕虫)are deliciously worming(蠕动)their way through the melting(融化的)soil.

As disasters go, this one was terrible, but not unique, certainly not among the worst U.S. air crashes on record. There was the unusual element of the bridge, of cour, and the fact that the plane hit it at a moment of high traffic. Then, too, there was the location of the event. Washington, the city of form and rules, turned chaotic
赛班岛by a blast of real winter and a single slap of metal on metal. The jets from Washington National Airport that normally fly around the presidential monuments like famished gulls are, for the moment reprented by the one that fell. And there was the aesthetic clash as well—blue-and-green Air Florida, the name a flying garden, sunk down among gray chunks of ice in a black river. All that was worth noticing, to be sure. Still, there was nothing very special in any of it, except death, which, while always special, does not nece
ssarily bring millions to tears or to attention. Why, then, the shock here?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, when it was time to return to our home outside of Philadelphia, I insisted that we take a different route.“Let's explore that countryside,”I suggested. The two days it took us to make the return trip were filled with new experiences. We toured a Civil War battlefield and stood on the little hill that fifteen thousand Confederate soldiers had tried to take on a
nother hot July afternoon, one hundred and twenty-five years ago, not knowing that half of them would get killed in the vain attempt. We drove slowly through main streets of sleepy Pennsylvania Dutch towns, slowing to twenty miles an hour so as not to crowd the hors and hor carriages on their way to market. We admired toy trains and antique cars in county muums and saved 70 percent in factory outlets,We stuffed ourlves with spicy salads and homemade bread in an "all-you-can-eat" farmhou restaurant, then wandered outside to enjoy the sunshine and the herds of cows—no little dots this time —lying in it. We returned home refreshed, revitalized, and reeducated. This time, getting there had been the fun.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I spent most of my time roaming the woods and fields alone, playing Robin Hood, daydreaming, collecting bugs and bird-watching. It was heaven for a boy —but a lonely heaven. Keeping to mylf was my way of not forming attachments that I would only have to abandon the next time we moved. But one day I became attached through no design of my own.
