Cour Description:
Buddhism was established by Sakyamuni Buddha in more than 2500 years ago. It entered China a few centuries after the Nirvana of the Buddha. During its development in China, it has a profound influence on traditional Chine culture and thoughts, and has become one of the most important religions in China at that time.
This cour is designed to introduce the fundamental knowledge, rearch methods and conci history of Buddhism to the students who are interested in religious studies. The cour first discuss a brief history of Buddhism from the time of its entry to China up to today. Then, students will understand the interaction between Buddhism and Chine culture. After that, students will examine different Buddhist Schools in China. Students will have good grasp of the characteristics of Chine Buddhism
and the historical development of Buddhism. Furthermore, Students will study the practice of Chine Buddhists to understand how the Buddhist belief influences both the monastic and lay Buddhists.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the mester, the students are expected to have grasped the rearch methods, history, characteristics, and practices of Chine Buddhism in different period so that they may have a full picture of the studies on Chine Buddhism in depth. Requirements
This cour is the organic combination of lecture and discussion. Students are requested to read the assigned reading materials before coming to the lecture of that week.
Tutorial is arranged parately by the tutor to help you digest the readings as well as materials discusd in the previous lecture or lectures. The format of tutorial will be organized by the tutor. You are encouraged to ask questions or respond to other‟s questions during the tutorial. This requires your critical reading of assigned materials and informed participation, and your active participation in both lecture and tutorial is the key for the success of the cour.
By the end of this minar, you are going to write a term paper of about 3000 to 5000 words on one of topics discusd in lectures, or you may choo your own topic related to the cour (in this ca, make sure you discuss with me beforehand). The term paper can be a concrete outcome of your short essays. You are expected to attend all lectures and tutorial on time without being late.
滑板初学Student must submit their papers via the Webpage of the Chine University Plagiarism Identification Engine (CUPIDE) uhk.edu.hk/student, and hand in a hardcopy to the instructor together with the receipt issued by CUPIDE. The due date for the submission of the term paper will be before 11:30pm on 12th December 2008.
