Apparatus for dispensing controlled quantities of iodine vapour into the envelopes of tungsten-iodine lamps compris an iodine rervoir 12 having a well 30 to receive iodine crystals, a passageway 26 extending downwardly from the rervoir through a toggle valve 60 and a manifold block 16, a clamping cap 18 for holding the exhaust tube 22 of a lamp envelope 24 in aled connection with the passageway, and heaters 58 for maintaining the iodine in vapour form. The cap 18 is connected by a quick turn thread to an extension 48 of the manifold block 16 and contains a rubber bushing 52 so that when the tube 22 is inrted into the bore of the bushing to abut a tube stop 50 and the cap 18 is tightened the bushing is compresd against the tube and the envelope is curely held. The envelope is first flushed and evacuated through tubes 44, 45 connected to the manifold block 16, and the valve plunger 61 is then withdrawn for about 1À5 conds to allow a suitable quantity of iodine vapour, preferably at least 0À1 to 1À0 micromole , to enter the envelope. Argon and/or nitrogen is then fed to the envelope through the tube 44 at a pressure of 700 mm. to 2À5 atm., the envelope is chilled, and the exhaust tube is aled and vered to parate the completed lamp from the apparatus.
