英语单元测试(三)
第一部分:阅读理解

American informality is well known. But we Chine are very likely to interpret it as a lack of respect when we first encounter it, especially in he business world. The almost immediate u of first names, for example, jars on our nerves long accustomed to deference from men of lower rank.
We should not be surprid if Americans do not shake hands with us. They often just nod or smile instead. A casual "Hi" or "Hello" of ten takes the place of a formal handshake. Americans at a party or in the office are not likely to circulate about a group and give each one a personal fare well. Instead they just wave a cherry "goodbye" or say something informal to the whole group such as "Well, e you tomorrow" or "So long every-body".
Then they will disappear, no handshakes, for Americans have different n of timing an
d pace from us.
Americans are often en working at office desks in short-sleeves, sometimes without ties. They may lean far hack in their chairs and even put their feet on the radiator or desk while they talk on the telephone. For us Chine this could be very rude, but Americans do not think so! American manners tend to be breezy!
The American pace is total, either totally hurried, competitive or el totally at ea, relaxed, "laid back" and informal. They tend to swing between the extremes. We need to understand this pendulum if we are to understand America and its people.

Dieting to lo weight has become very popular in recent years. People have become more health conscious and try to take better care of their bodies by eating more nutritiously and exercising more regularly to lo any unnecessary fat that they may have.
Not only are people being more careful about what they eat, they are also concerned with how they eat and how their meals are prepared. People are taking more time for each meal. Many avoid the so-called "plastic" fast-food hamburgers and choo to eat a salad or a sandwich of more
healthful ingredients in a quiet restaurant with a more leisurely at mo-sphere. At home, they also try to take enough time to eat a relaxed dinner without phone or TV interruptions.
While dieting may be viewed as beneficial, it has also become a rious problem for Ame
ricans, particularly for young women. Dieting for them has actually become a psychological addiction. They eat so little that they can lo as much as fifty percent of their total body weight, and al-though they look like skeletons, they still insist that they are fat.
