On March 25, 2010, Kate and David heard the words every parent dreads: Their newborn wasn't going to make it. Their twins-a girl and a boy-were born two minutes apart and 14 weeks premature, weighing just over two pounds each. Doctors had tried to save the boy for 20 minutes but saw no improvement. His heartbeat was nearly gone, and he'd stopped breathing. The baby had just moments to live.
"I saw him gasp (喘息), but the doctor said it was no u," Kate told the Daily Mail five years later. "I know it sounds stupid, but if he was still gasping, that was a sign of life. I wasn't going to give up easily."
Still, the couple knew this was likely a goodbye. In an effort to cherish her last minutes with the tiny boy, Kate asked to hold him.
"I wanted to meet him, and for him to know us," Kate told Today. "We'd resigned ourlves to the fact that we were going to lo him, and we were just trying to make the most of tho last, precious moments."
Kate unwrapped the boy, whom the couple had already named Jamie, from his hospital blanket and asked David to take his shirt off and join them in bed. The first-time parents wanted their son to be as warm as possible and hoped the skin-to-skin contact would improve his condition. They also talked to him.
"We were trying to persuade him to stay," Kate told the Daily Mail. "We explained his name and that he had a twin that he had to look out for and how hard we had tried to have him." Then something miraculous happened. Jamie gasped again-and then he started breathing. Finally, he reached for his father's finger.
The couple's lost boy had made it.
"We're the luckiest people in the world," David told Today.
Eight years later, Jamie and his sister, Emily, are happy and healthy. The couple only recently told th
e kids the story of their birth. "Emily burst into tears," Kate said. "She was really upt, and she kept hugging Jamie. This whole experience makes you cherish them more."

I believe in the power of science fiction, not just for its capacity to transform dreams into reality, but also for its power to bond together tho who share a common vision of the future. For me, that's tru

Over the years, nearly every tting and situation has become far away for my dad and me. When it's warm at night, we're not driving along some dark streets in Indiana, but going at a slow speed with stars dimly shining. Both of us are thinking of them, without needing to say a word. All the visions of other univers have together created a private univer for my dad and me.
Gene Rodenberry, creator of Star Trek, once said, " Science fiction is a way of thinking, a way of logic that bypass(绕过)a lot of nonn. It allows people to look directly at important subjects. "A lifetime of science fiction has influenced more than just my relationship with my dad, but has also helped me shape my own hopes for the future. I'm now a science writer. Yes, science fiction has made me into a "nerd"(书呆⼦), and it also has been a source of joy for my family, making me an optimist while enabling me to think critically about the danger of
technology. Thank tho authors who have shared their visions; the world and my family are better for it. Thank my dad, who is both the best storyteller and the best man I have ever known becau h

It was no great distance, in tho days, from the prison-door to the market-place. In our nature, however, there is a condition that the sufferer should never know the intensity of what he endures by its prent suffering, but chiefly by the pain that rankles (使痛⼼)after it. With almost a calm manner, therefore, Hester

4.阅读理解
It can be a real struggle trying to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easily, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language.
At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, lout then I realid that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given the basic texts to familiari our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK. I managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.
The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. As a result, you can work out some of the definitions of words with your prior knowledge of the story. At first, I ud to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this method did not work well for me. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter of you
r chon children's book and at the end of that chapter, highlight the words you do not know and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before you u a dictionary, you may be surprid what you can get merely from the context of the ntence in the story. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or to whom the passage is referring.

A. Becau she was weak in reading great works.
B. Becau she was slow to learn language.
C. Becau she liked children's literature.
D. Becau she couldn't remember any words.
(2)What can kids get from children's books according to the passage?
A. Vocabulary and listening skills.
B. Learning methods.
C. Words and structures.
D. Designing skills.
(3)What caus the author feel surprid while reading children's books?
A. Grasping the context from the pictures.
B. Looking up the definitions of words from a dictionary.
C. Getting familiar with the plots of the story.
D. Understanding the words simply from the context.
(4)What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Reading Children's Books
B. The Way of Learning Languages
C. The Method of Using Dictionary
D. My Good Reading Habits
【答案】(1)A
