In January 1955, Jill Kinmont,then 19, emed certain to make the United States Olympic ski team. Since age twelve, she had focud on this goal. Throughout high school in Bishop, California, she had competed at most Western ski areas, including Mammoth Mountain, Sun Valley, Aspen, Jackson, and Brighton. She had won both the women's and the junior national slalom championships before traveling to Alta,Utah,to compete in the pre-Olympic tryout. As Jill says, "Skiing was it — everything — my world. "被芯
Jill's world collapd on January 30 when she skied off the Alta run and landed helpless on the slope. Her fourth, fifth, and sixth cervical vertebrae were broken. For days, Jill hovered between life and death. By April, it became clear that she would be paralyzed from the shoulders down.
Jill underwent rehabilitation therapy with cheerful determination. She learned to write, to type, and to feed herlf. Once she had mastered daily living skills, she enrolled in the University of Califonia at Los Angeles, where she studied art, German, and-English. After overcoming yet another personal tragedy, the death of her boyfriend in a plane crash, Jill graduated in 1961.
By this time, Jill had chon a new career goal: teaching elementary school children. Officials at UCLA, however, rejected her application for admission to the graduate school of education becau of her paralysis. But she pervered, working with children in the UCLA Clinic School. When her family moved to Seattle, Jill was able to fulfill her new dream. She attended the School of Education at the University of Washington and began her new life's work as a teacher.

Rockets come in all sizes. Any rocket is interesting and often exciting, but there is one that also promis to be wonderful fun for the pilot. This rocket is designed to carry one person through the air for short distances.
Imagine a person able to ri higher than the treetops,to soar like a wingless bird over hills, streams, even buildings. Then, just by turning a handle, he or she can ttle gently to earth again. All this is possible with a fascinating invention, hardly larger than a life jacket, called a rocket belt.
The rocket belt looks like a padded vest with two steel tanks on the back and a handgrip extending over each shoulder. Turning the left handgrip lets the pilot ri into the air, higher than the tops of trees. Turning the right handgrip lets him or her speed ahead, like a wingless bird. By controlling the right grip and body motions, the pilot can come to a stop in the air. Then, by regulating the thrust with the left hand, the pilot can come back to earth gently.
