In 1989, an 8.2 earthquake almost flattened America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In the midst of utter devastation and chaos, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was suppod to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promi he had made to his son: "No matter what, I‟ll always be there for you!" And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
He began to direct his attention towards where his son‟s classroom would be and he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.
No one helped. Courageously he went on alone becau he needed to know for himlf: "Is my boy alive or is he dead?" He dug for hen, in the 38th hour, he
pulled back a large stone and heard his son s
voice. He screamed his son‟s name, "ARMAND!" He heard back, "Dad It‟s me, Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, you‟d save me and when you saved me, they‟d be saved. You promid, …No matter what happens, I‟ll always be there for you!‟ You did it, Dad!"

I was six years old and my sister, Sally Kay, was a submissive three. For some reason, I thought we needed to earn some money. I decided we should “hire out” as maids. One day, my mother received a phone call and knew that we cheated the neighbors by telling we would clean their hous for some money, but we never did.

Mother stooped and gathered us in her ar ms. I couldn‟t understand why there were tears in her eyes. We still had time
to get the bus. But hugging us, she gently explained that this was what a fib felt like.
“It is important that what we SAY is TRUE,” Mother said, “ I fibbed to you just now and i t felt awful to me. I don‟t ever want to fib again and I‟m sure you don‟t want to fib again either. People must be able to believe each other. Do you understand?”
We assured her that we understood. We would never forget.
“And since we had learned the lesso n, w hy not go on to The Matinee? There was still time.”
“Not today,” Mother told us. We would go another time.

Target made headlines last year when it announced that its stores would no longer post signs to direct customers to buy certain toys for girls and others for boys. Much of the push to parate toys by gender has come from toymakers, advertirs, and stores. Using stereotypes—or fixed, oversimplified ideas—makes lling easier. Plus, if a sister and brother in a same hou don't share toys, it creates twice as much business.
People who agree with Target's decision say children should not be told what to like, how to act, and what to play with. They say it is healthy for kids to experiment with different toys and interests
Phèdre, from California thinks that toy stores should not parate toys by gender. A toy is a toy! A girl might want to play with a "boy" toy. Who cares? It's just a toy! Companies don't care about you. They care about making money. Sometimes, kids pretend to like something just to fit into a mold. It's not healthy for kids to grow up trying to fit a stereotype. Every kid should try different toys. If kids aren't expod to everything, they might miss out on a hobby, an interest, or even a future career. Let's allow all children to be themlves.
