羡鱼 Popularization has in some cas changed the original meaning of emotional (情感的) intelligence. Many people now misunderstand emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person's makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and “people skills.” Rearch has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of the qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-bad emotional intelligence.
We prefer to describe emotional intelligence as a specific t of skills that can be ud for either good or bad purpos. The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling m
ay be ud by a doctor to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might u it to control potential victims. Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one a moral person.
Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what rearch can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis (重视) on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being. The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and rearchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they rve people adaptively in everyday life.
Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives (视角) from which to study how people manage their lives. Emotional intellig
ence, with its focus on both head and heart, may rve to point us in the right direction.

A new study, published this week in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science, reveals that non-human animals' tears are not so different from our own. The chemical similarities are so great, in fact, that the composition of other species’ tears—and how they’re adapted to their environments-may provide insights into better treatments for human eye dia.
Previously, scientists had studied cloly only the tears of a handful of mammals, including humans, dogs, hors, camels, and monkeys. In the new study, Brazilian veterinarians analyzed the tears of reptiles and birds for the first time , focusing on ven species.
Tears, which are relead from tear tubes, form a film over the eye that's compod of three ingredients: mucus, waler, and oil. The mucus coats the eyes surface and helps to attach the film to the eye, the water is a natural salty solution containing crucial proteins and minerals, and the oil prevents the eye from drying out.
Humans are the only known species to produce emotional tears; the expression “crocodile tears,” which refers to a person’s phony西式烹饪 display of emotion, comes from the mysterious tendency of crocodiles to relea tears as they eat.
But tears play key roles beyond weeping, notes Lionel Sebbag at Iowa State University, who was not involved in the new rearch. They help with vision by lubricating and clearing the eye. They also protect the eye against infection and provide nutrition to the cornea, the eye’s clear outer layer, which lacks blood tubes, he says.
Learning how reptiles and birds' u tears may also inspire new medications for conditions such as dry eye, which occurs when tear tubes don’t produce enough oil. The dia, common in cats, dogs, and people, can sometimes lead to blindness.
