幸福无关访谈总结 Nearly always when discussing two or more things, you will both point out their similarities and their differences. This function of discussion is called comparison and contrast. It is a highly uful one which forces you to think in concrete terms and therefore is usually interesting. Most ntences or paragraphs developed by comparison and contrast will discuss only a pair of objects, opinions, or people rather than three or more. And they will probably u one or two methods. The first method examines one half of the pair in detail before moving to the other half.

In Japan, people spend their entire working life with a single company. They are not judged or under pressure to perform. In the United States, people often switch jobs and are constantly under pressure to perform. Their performance is evaluated frequently.
The other common method of developing by comparison and contrast looks at both members of the pair at once, discussing about them point by point.
For example:
In terms of employment, the Japane have a lifetime employment system while people in the U.S. change jobs often. And the work environment in Japan is non-judgmental and free of pressure, whereas in the U.S. evaluation and high pressure are common.
Such a point-by-point examination may rely on both comparison and contrast or only one. But the above two methods in no way reprent all the possibilities. In addition, you may find many other ways of talking by comparison and contrast.
In this unit, you will extend your ability to describe and discuss similarities and differences and to explain your preferences.

Henry: Well, I think I’d prefer to live in a well, I think the people are friendly and there’s a lot of fresh air. I think life generally is healthier in a village and I like being clo to nature. And it’s very easy for my work as a writer to have peace and quiet.
Chairman: Mary?
Mary: Well, I’d prefer to live in a city becau there’s more going on. Er… being an actress, I need to go to the cinema and the theatre and there’s far more entertainment in the city than there is in the country, of cour. I also like um... people are more open-minded. People don’t... um... mind what you do in the city. And for the shopping as well, I mean, I love going to the village shop but the stores and shops in London can’t compare with anything.
Chairman: You don’t city can be lonely?
Mary: Oh, no, no. have to go out and make friends.
Chairman: Good, fine.
Mary: ... at least there’s the opportunity in London.
Chairman: Jenny?
Jenny: Yes, well, I prefer living in a village. It’s safer than a city and there’s less crime and of cour there’s less traffic, so it’s much more pleasant. Then, it’s much cheaper than the city. you know, rents are cheaper and so of cour are hou prices. It’s quiet, it’s... it’s peaceful. Yes, I much prefer living in a village.
Chairman: Jolly good, all right. Well, thank you very much indeed.
