PEEK™ polymer is ud typically as a replacement for machined metals in a wide variety of high performance end-u applications. Polybutene-1 (PB-1)
PB-1 is obtained by polymerisation of butene-1, with a stereo-specific Ziegler-Natta catalyst to create a linear, high molecular, isotactic, mi-crystalline polymer.
A major application area for polybutene resins is al-peel or easy-open packaging. Typical examples include carton liners (e.g. cereal packaging) and packs for pre-packed delicatesn products like cold meats, chees and smoked salmon.
Nylons(Polyamides)PA
The majority of nylons tend to be mi-crystalline and are generally very tough materials with good thermal and chemical resistance. The different types give a wide range of properties with specific gravity, melting point and moisture content tending to reduce as the nylon number increas.
Nylon fibres are ud in textiles, fishing line and carpets. Nylon films is ud for food packaging, offering toughness and low gas permeability, and coupled with its temperature resistance, for boil-in-the-bag food packaging.
PolycarbonatePC
Polycarbonates are strong, stiff, hard, tough, transparent engineering thermoplastics that can maintain rigidity up to 140oC and toughness down to -20°C or special grades even lower.
In recent years Polycarbonate blends have become increasingly commercially important. PC is widely ud in blends due to its excellent compatibility with a range of polymers.
Polyesters (Thermoplastic)PETP, PBT, PET
PBT, PET and PBT Blends are engineering plastics with excellent processing characteristics and high strength and rigidity for a broad range of applications.

Polybutene-1 (PB-1)
INTRODUCTION
Polybutene (PB-1), like polyethylene and polypropylene, is a polyolefin or saturated polymer that is expresd as CnH2n. PB-1 combines the typical properties of conventional polymers with some characteristics of technical polymers.

PB-1 is ud as a pure resin at the expen of metal, rubber and Engineering Polymers, it is also ud synergistically as a blend component to improve and differentiate the properties of other polyolefins.


PROPERTIES
PB-1 is obtained by polymerisation of butene-1, with a stereo-specific Ziegler-Natta catalyst to create a linear, high molecular, isotactic, mi-crystalline polymer.

When ud as a pure resin, PB-1's creep properties are exceptional. In addition to excellent creep resistance, the polymer has low stiffness, resists impact well (even at low temperatures) and has excellent elastic recovery.

PB-1 posss good resistance to acids, bas, detergents, oils, fats, alcohol, ketones, aliphatic hydrocarbons and hot polar solutions, including water. PB-1 is nsitive to oxidising acids, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The polymer is very innsitive to environmental stress cracking.

PB-1 is also ud to enhance the properties of Polypropylene, Polyethylene and Thermoplastic Elastomers. In films, PB-1 can improve aling performance, the ability to peel with controlled force, be softer and more flexible, have better high temperature strength or be more elastic. PB-1 compounded TPEs tend to display dramatic improvements in high temperature stiffness.

PB-1 displays excellent resistance to creep, abrasion, chemicals and environmental stress cracking, properties exploited in pipes for heating and plumbing. Minimal cold flow. Forms excellent blends with polypropylene. Incompatability with polyethylene is ud to make peelable PE bad film als.

APPLICATIONS
A major application area for polybutene resins is al-peel or easy-open packaging. Typical examples include carton liners (e.g. cereal packaging) and packs for pre-packed delicatesn products like cold meats, chees and smoked salmon. PB-1 offers the ability to customi aling temperatures and al strength whilst giving consistent, reliable processing and aling performance on existing equipment, and built-in tamper-evidence. PB-1 can also be ud in film modification to increa flexibility and softness without sacrificing clarity. In a similar vein, PB-1 is ud to modify polypropylene fibres to enhance softness, flexibility and to provide a unique feel.

PB-1 is also ud commercially in films that require creep resistance such as insulation compression packaging. It can also be ud as a layer or overall film for hot filled heavy duty packaging, tapes for bundling and holding loads at elevated temperature such as bale wrap, speciality sheet applications such as anti-erosion geo-grids and netting and cable ties.

PB-1 features in hot melt adhesives, where its unique crystallisation behaviour reduces the melting point and extends the "open time" of the adhesive to as much as 30 minutes, to enable time for repositioning of components prior to tting. It is ud widely as a component in hot melt adhesives for non-woven fibre webs.
PB-1 is also typically ud in applications that e continuous load at moderate to high temperatures. It is ud in electric domestic heaters in North America, where it is blow moulded into large 15-20 kg tanks. Other logical extensions may include fire extinguishers, residential and swimming pool water filter housings, pressurid pneumatic holding tanks, hos, compresd gas cylinders and aerosol dispenrs, to name just a few. There is also considerable interest in the potential of PB-1 to be ud as a component in synthetic wine corks.

PB-1 is also employed in compounded polymer products to provide unique benefits. It accepts extremely high filler loadings (>70%), which combined with its low melting point, enables it to be ud in halogen-free flame retardant composites or as a masterbatch carrier for difficult-to-disper or temperature-nsitive pigments; its unique rheology and concomitant easy dispersability enable it to be ud at very low levels in other polyolefins as a processing aid to reduced extruder pressures and/or increa extruder throughput.

In Europe and Asia, PB-1 has been developed over the past 30 years to be arguably the technically preferred material for hot and cold water plumbing and heating piping systems. Pipe system manufacturers state that piping systems made from PB-1 offer easy, fast installation with a reduced number of joints and connectors compared to much stiffer conventional plumbing materials. In rvice, they note that the piping does not corrode or fur up in hard water areas, it does not split at sub-zero temperatures and is quieter in u as it does not suffer from "water hammer". It is ud both in the construction of new buildings and the renovation of older properties. A major UK houbuilder us PB-1 piping systems exclusively in all its new properties.
Ball's PB-1 is not being sold in pipe applications intended for u in North America.
