学而第一
子曰:“学而时习之,不亦悦乎?有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎?人不知而不愠,不亦君子乎?”

有子曰:“其为人也孝悌而好犯上者,鲜矣。不好犯上而好作乱者,未之有也。君子务本,本立而道生。孝悌也者,其为仁之本与?”
The philos opher Yu said, "They are few who, beingfilial and
frater nal, are fond of offend ing agains t theirsuperi ors. Therehave
been none, who, not liking to offend agains t theirsuperi ors, have
been fond of stirri ng up confus ion.
"The superi or man bendshis attent ion to what is radica l. That beingestabl ished, all practi cal course s natura lly grow up. Filial pietyand
frater nal submis sion,-are they not the root of all benevo lent
action s?"
子曰:“巧言令色,鲜矣仁。”
The Master said, "Fine wordsand an insinu ating appear anceare
ldom associ atedwith true virtue."
曾子曰:吾日三省乎吾身。为人谋而不忠乎?与朋友交而不信乎?传不习乎?
The philos opher Tsangsaid, "I dailyexamin e mylf on three
points:-whethe r, in transa cting busine ss for others, I may have been
not faithf ul;-whethe r, in interc ourse with friend s, I may have been
not sincer e;-whethe r I may have not master ed and practi ced the
instru ction s of my teache r."
子曰:道千乘之国,敬事而信,节用而爱人,使民以时。
The Master said, "To rule a countr y of a thousa nd chario ts, there
must be revere nt attent ion to busine ss, and sincer ity; econom y in
expend iture, and love for men; and the employ mentof the people at the
proper ason s."
子曰:弟子入则孝,出则悌,谨而信,泛爱众而亲仁,行有余力,则以学文。正面上手发球
The Master said, "A youth, when at home, should be filial, and,
abroad, respec tfulto his elders. He should be earnes t and truthf ul.
He should overfl ow in love to all, and cultiv ate the friend shipof the good. When he has time and opport unity, afterthe perfor mance of thethings, he should employ them in polite studie s."
子夏曰:贤贤易色,事父母,能竭其力。事君,能致其身。与朋友交,言而有信。虽曰未学,吾必谓之学矣。
Tsze-hsia said, "If a man withdr aws his mind from the love of
beauty, and applie s it as sincer ely to the love of the virtuo us; if,
in rvin g his parent s, he can exerthis utmost streng th; if, in
rvin g his prince, he can devote his life; if, in his interc ourse
with his friend s, his wordsare sincer e:-althou gh men say that he
has not learne d, I will certai nly say that he has.
子曰:君子不重则不威,学则不固。主忠信,无友不如己者,过则勿惮改。
The Master said, "If the schola r be not grave, he will not call
forthany venera tion, and his learni ng will not be solid.

"Hold faithf ulnes s and sincer ity as firstprinci ples.
"Have no friend s not equalto yourse lf.
"When you have faults, do not fear to abando n them."
曾子曰:慎终追远,民德归厚矣。
The philos opher Tsangsaid, "Let therebe a carefu l attent ion to

子禽问于子贡曰:“夫子至于是邦也,必闻其政。求之与?抑与之与?”子贡曰:“夫子温良恭俭让以得之。夫子求之也,其诸异乎人之求之与?”
Tsze-ch'in askedTsze-kung saying, "When our master comesto any
countr y, he does not fail to learnall aboutits govern ment. Does he
ask his inform ation? or is it givento him?"
Tsze-kung said, "Our master is benign, uprigh t, courte ous,
temper ate, and compla isant and thus he gets his inform ation. The
master's mode of asking inform ation,-is it not differ ent from that

子曰:父在,观其志。父没,观其行。三年无改于父之道,可谓孝矣。The Master said, "Whilea man's father is alive, look at the bent of
his will; when his father is dead, look at his conduc t. If for three
yearshe does not alterfrom the way of his father, he may be called
