Dias spread in many ways. An infected person can cough or sneeze on someone nearby, or they can spread germs through a handshake. But sometimes we pick up germs indirectly. A sick person might leave behind bacteria or virus when they touch a door handle, for example. But what if tho surfaces could clean themlves?
Two teenagers from Hong Kong asked themlves the same question. Now they’ve developed a door handle that can kill germs on contact.
The idea is simple. Every time the door is opened, the movement creates power that starts a germ-killing reaction on the handle. In lab tests, their system killed about 99.8 percent of the germs that they spread onto lab dishes covered with their material.
Rearch by others has shown that door handles in public areas are often home to lots of bacteria and virus, notes 17-year-old Sum Ming (“Simon”)Wong. He and his schoolmate Kin Pong (Micha
el) Li, 18, wanted to design a covering for door handles that would kill germs.
After doing some rearch, they learned that a mineral called titanium dioxide (二氧化钛)is known to kill bacteria. It’s already ud in many products, from paints to desrts. To make their covering, the teenagers made the mineral into a very fine powder.
画pptTitanium dioxide kills bacteria best when lit by ultraviolet (紫外线的) light, says Simon. UV light is found in sunlight. But UV light does not naturally shine on indoor handles or any ud at night, so the teenagers light their door handle from within.
To make sure the light reaches the coated surface, the teenagers made their door handle out of clear glass. Each end fits into a bracket (托架). Inside one of the brackets is a strong light-emitting diode (LED). From it comes UV light.
And here’s the interesting part: The power that makes the UV light shine comes from opening and closing the door. The power from the door is then carried by wire to the LED inside the door handle.
The door handle system, Michael and Simon say, might cost no more than about $13 (about 81 yuan) to build.

This may sound like a joke about a lazy person’s dream job. Earn big money by staying in bed and watching TV. But this is really happening, and it’s a project of NASA and two European space agencies the Institute of Aerospace Medicine at the Cologne-bad German Aerospace Center and the European Space Agency. It’s called Artificial Gravity Bed Rest Study, aimed at studying how the body adapts to weightlessness in space.
Scientists are eking 12 women to spend two full months in bed in the fall at a German lab, plus an additional month there for preparation and recovery. The first 12 test subjects, all men, already have started the study.
Participants spend two entire months in bed and remain lying down even to do everyday things like eating, drinking and exercising. They also answer nature’s call and shower, but it’s unclear from the NASA website how tho tasks are accomplished in bed.
“Daily routine showering, getting dresd, eating, exercising takes much time when you cannot stand up to do them,” says the website, adding that there
is “continuous data collection”, including blood pressure, heart rate, nutrient absorption and also the participants’ feelings. Study subjects will spend the 60 days with their heads tilted (倾斜) down six degrees, which imitates (模仿) conditions in space.
Participants are encouraged to pass the time by watching TV, taking online cours, reading and any other activities they can perform while lying down alone in bed to relieve what could be boredom. Family and friends are allowed to visit.
The high $ 18,500 payment for two months of lazing about is probably a major motivation for people willing to go through something this extreme. However, if you’re an American who really needs the money, you probably can’t afford it. Candidates need to travel to Cologne four times at their own expen for the employment process between April and July. Plus, they need strong German-speaki

D. Record their physical respons every day.
25. What data about the participants will the rearchers collect?

Four years ago, my sweet mom went to be with her Lord. She did it her way.
I got the call at work, and I headed home quickly. Mom and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was ven. I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV t, if the weather allowed reception.
My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land. The place was rustic(乡村的), with no indoor plumbing or heat. We had a big wood stove in the kitchen that did its best to heat the little farmhou, but it always emed cold and too quiet to me.
In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen. I sang the melody and Mom harmonized. Her favorite song was “Moon River” and we sang it over and over. Mom told me stories about how when I was a little girl, I could sing before I could talk.
