According to the National Science Foundation–funded Cutting Edge Project(2006),a2005survey of 74faculty respondents found that a majority,59 percent,cho Applied Hydrogeology(Fetter,2001) as their text for general hydrogeology;19percent ud Fundamentals of Groundwater(Schwartz and Zhang,2002);and the remaining respondents,22 percent,assigned a scattering of other texts or a combination of texts.It would em safe to assume that the above texts also enjoy a wide distribution among practicing professional hydrogeologists,al-though more experienced geoscientists may still favor previous texts,such as Domenico and Schwartz(1998)and the venerable Groundwater (Freeze and Cherry,1979).
Now entering the fray is a new text,Hydrogeology: Principles and Practice,by Kevin Hiscock(2005). The text is organized in a conventional manner, including introductory chapters on the hydro-logic cycle and
炒木须肉physical and chemical hydrogeol-ogy.The author appears to assume that readers have been expod—or will be expod elwhere—to principles of surface hydrology,perhaps a reason-able assumption for environmental scientists and engineers,but not necessarily for geologists.Later chapters deal with groundwater investigative tech-niques;groundwater quality and contaminant hydro-geology;groundwater remediation;and groundwater management and resource evaluation.An appendix contains problem ts for each chapter.Notably abnt from Hiscock’s text are supplemental re-sources such as the CD packaged with Fetter’s text(2001)and access to a website with software, which accompanies the Schwartz and Zhang text (2002).
Throughout the text,Hiscock manages to be thorough without being exhaustive.Conquently, the text is contained in fewer than400pages(albeit with a10-point font),while Fetter(2001)and Schwartz and Zhang(2002)both weigh in at just under600pages.This is an impressive demonstration of conci writing and editing in an era in which more is often en as better,especially in the college textbook marketplace,where there is an apparent effort to deliver greater mass to justify high prices. Students,especially,but also instructors and profes-sionals,will appreciate the compactness without a sacrifice in content.As a result,Hiscock could reasonably be tackled in a one-mester cour,while covering all of Fetter in a mester is difficult,and this endeavor would be nearly impossible with Schwartz and Zhang.
颠倒歌儿歌Hiscock also reprents a difference in emphasis relative to the other standard texts of general hydrogeology.The author explains in the book’s preface that this work reflects his career of rearch in and teaching of hydrology and hydrogeology in the context of environmental science at the University of East Anglia(United Kingdom).For example,His-cock devotes a mere14pages to well and aquifer testing,compared to Fetter’s65-page chapter dedi-cated to the same topics.The contrast in approach is partly attributable to the superior organization and editing in Hiscock,as noted above,and partly attributable to the different audiences that will likely u the distinct texts.Engineering geologists,given their quantitative background and interest in site characterization,may well feel more comfortable with the more comprehensive treatment of well and aquifer testing contained in Fetter and/or the more rigorous theoretical and mathematical approach ud through-out Schwartz and Zhang.
On the other hand,Hiscock integrates numerous hydrogeologic examples and ca studies throughout the text,including graphs,tables,and figures replete with measurements and calculations.The author does a particularly good job with the examples of illustrating the influence of geology on groundwater flow and chemistry.For example,in discussing groundwater us in developing countries,Hiscock explains that the problems being experienced in the Quaternary aquife错过的时光
r system of the North China Plain—falling water table,depletion of a deep fresh-water aquifer,aquifer salinization,and groundwater pollution—are interlinked but do not affect the entire region equally becau of three distinct hydrogeologic ttings(Piedmont,flood plain,and coastal plain). Many civil and geotechnical engineers would do well to appreciate the geologic heterogeneity and com-plexity prented in the examples and their effect on site conditions.窦性心律不齐需要治疗吗
A more classic environmental orientation is also reflected in Hiscock’s decision to dedicate an entire chapter to the u of environmental isotopes in

hydrogeology.Similarly,many of the investigative techniques described in this text are applicable to characterizing surface water or groundwater at the watershed or regional scales,whereas Fetter us comparable chapter headings to describe monitoring well installation and an array of surface and borehole geophysical techniques applicable largely to sub-surface site investigations.
In sum,Hiscock’s text is not likely to displace tho of either Fetter or Schwartz and Zhang as one of the most popular textbooks in u for college-level cours in general hydrogeology,nor is it likely to replace the others as a reference text for practicing geoscientists.However,this new text should appe
al to more environmentally oriented students,instructors, and professionals and would rve well as a supple-mentary text for engineering geologists and the like who are eking to broaden their perspective on this multifaceted subject.
