I ud to teach in public schools. After veral years of teaching, what impresd me was that IQ was not the only 16 between my best and my worst students. Some of my 17 performers didn’t have very high IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well. If doing well in school and in life depends on much more than IQ, then what is it?
I 18 the classroom and became a psychologist. I started studying kids and adults in all kinds of 19 ttings.
We went to West Point Military Academy (西点军校). We tried to 20 which students w
ould stay in military training and which would drop out. We went to the National Spelling Bee (全国拼字大赛) and tried to predict which children would advance farthest in 21 . We studied new teachers working in really tough neighborhoods, asking which teachers were still going to be there at the end of the school year.
In all tho very different situations, one characteristic stood 22 . It wasn’t social intelligence, or good looks, or physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. It was grit.
Grit is passion (热情) and perverance for very 23 goals. Grit is sticking with your future, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for 24 , and working really hard to make it come true. Grit is living life like it’s a 25 not a 100-meter race.
Grit also matters in school, 26 for kids at risk of dropping out. I asked thousands of high school juniors to take grit questionnaires, and then 27 兢兢战战 around more than a year to e who would graduate. It 28 that grittier kids were more likely to graduate.
However, we still know 29 about building grit. Perhaps that’s the work that 30 bef
ore us. We need to take our best ideas and test them. We need to be gritty about getting our kids grittier.
