It is the 55th member in the family of BeiDou. It belongs to China’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS 北斗卫星导航系统). So far, all the members of Beidou, 59 satellites, have been launched into space. With the development of China, we have already owned three other famous satellite launch centers — Jiuquan, Taiyuan and Wenchang.
Now, the satellite works well with other Beidou satellites together. So far, China has completed the third-generation network of China’s BDS. It was a new milestone in the nati on’s space rearch work. The launch showed that our country has completed our largest space-bad system. It’s one of four international net-works, including the United States’ GPS, Russian’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo.

China builds Beidou
On May 17, 2021 China launched a new satellite at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center(西昌卫星发射中心).It was the forty-fifth Beidou satellite that China had nt into space.
So what is Beidou?
Beidou is positioning system (定位系统). It is developed by China. China is the third country in the world to have its own positioning system. With Beidou, China no longer has to depend on foreign systems. This is very important for national safety.
Work on Beidou began in 1994. However, the first two Beidou satellites, were not nt into space until 2000. Since then, China has launched dozens of Beidou satellites. The satellites have formed a global network. Now, China is further improving the system. It plans to launch〔发射〕ten more Beidou satellites. If it goes well, Beidou will be completed before 2021.
The complete Beidou will be more powerful than any existing〔现存的〕positioning system all over the world. Yang Changfeng is a designer of Beidou. He says the system can notice the sway 〔摇摆
〕of a building in strong winds.
Beidou has bought many advantages to our lives. In Shanghai, thousands of bus have been using Beidou. When we are waiting for a bus, we can know when it is about to come.
Many smart phones have also been using Beidou, “ Many people say, let me turn on my GPS. In fact, their phones are using Beidou, 〞jokes a salesperson in Beijing.
6. According to the article, how many countries had developed their own positioning systems before China?
A. Two.
B. Three.
C. Forty-five
D. Forty-four.
7. When did China nd the first two Beidou satellites into space?
A. In1994.
B. In 2000.
C. In 2021.
D. In 2021.
8. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Beidou is very powerful.
B. Many people have been using Beidou.
C. GPS can be more powerful than Beidou.
D. Few smart phones have been using Beidou.
9. Which of the following is true?
A. The Beidou system has already been completed since May 17,2021.

B. China didn't have to depend on foreign positioning systems before.
C. The Completed Beidou system will have 45 satellites in all.
D. Beidou will be the most powerful positioning system in the world.

When you want to go somewhere, you can easily find your way by using a map app on your smartphone. Your smartphone “knows〞where you are and can tell you where to go.
毕淑敏经典作品This is possible with the help of satellite navigation (satnav) systems. A satnav system us groups of satellites to find out where people are. It nds information to a receiver, such as a smartphone. The more satellites a system has, the more accurate (精确的) it is.
On June 23, the last satellite of China’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System was launched into spa ce. Beidou, China’s own satnav system was finally completed. It is one of four global navigation systems, along with US’ GPS, Ru ssia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo.
On July 31, Beidou started providing full-scale global rvices. More than 120 countries and regions are now using Beidou rvices.
毕业致谢Since 2000, China has launched 59 Beidou satellites. Beidou can be ud in areas that include farming, public rvices and business. It has a positioning (定位) accuracy of under 10 meters. This summer, people along the Yangtze River ud Beidou-bad device to monitor floodwaters in real-time with an accuracy of just a few centimeters.
10. Beidou is the ________ global navigation system.
A. first
B. cond
C. third
D. fourth
11. Which of the fllowing is TRUE about Beidou?
A. It only works in China.
B. Its newest satellites are more accurate.
C. It started working on June 23.
D. It will have more satellites in the future.
12. What does a satnav system do?
A. It helps people plan trips.
B. It helps people shop online.
C. It lets people nd text navigate.
D. It makes people’s phones smarter.
13. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Beidou can be ud in many areas.

Many years ago, people relied on the sun, the moon and stars to find their way around. Later, the compass (指南针) was introduced. And now, we have satnav (卫星导航) systems to guide us. A satnav system us groups of satellites to show the ur’s location. They nd information to a receiver, such as a smart phone, to show us where we are.
The earliest built satnav system is the Global Positioning System, which belongs to the US. Then there is Russia’s Global Navigation (导航) Satellite System, the European Union’s Galileo and China’s own satellite navigation system, BeiDou.
On October 14, 2021, an ARJ21-700 plane, which was the first domestically-produced jet (国产喷气式飞机) equipped with the BeiDou navigation system, successfully completed a test flight. The results showed the performance of the system developed by China matches that of similar systems produced aboard, according to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.
Since its introduction in 2000, the Beidou navigation system has en increasing numbers of applications linked to everyday life, from shared bikes to farming.
When it comes to shared bikes, smart locks that support BeiDou chips offer more accurate positioning than others, making it easier to find a bike.
Farmers can u BeiDou-enabled tractors to plow (犁) the soil and u unmanned aircraft with BeiDou to sow eds, which can impr ove efficiency and make better u of resources. BeiDou’s farming applications have spread from Heilongjiang province to Beijing, Liaoning, Shanxi, Hubei and other regions across China.
With its many us, the Beidou navigation system is even playing a big role in the Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路). “To date, the BeiDou system has covered most parts of the Asia-Pacific region (地区), as well as countries along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road〞said Yang Changfeng, Chief designer of the BeiDou system.
Today, there are more than 20 BeiDou satellites above our heads, and China plans to launch even more this year to expand the BeiDou network to better rve the Belt and Road Initiative.
“As BeiDou expands its overas reach, it w ill be increasingly popular in the logistics (物流) industry,〞said Miao Qianjun, cretary-general of the navigation rvices asso ciation. “Ships, for example, can u it to position themlves while sailing across oceans to European countries, no lon
ger limited to Southeast Asian regions in the near future.〞

A. To compare some modern satnav systems.
B. To describe the benefits of satnav systems.
C. To tell us how satnav systems were created.
D. To introduce some satnav systems and how they work.
15. What can we know about the BeiDou navigation system according to the article?
A. It was ud successfully in a new jet plane.
B. It is more powerful than other satnav systems.
C. It was introduced into China on October 14, 2021.
D. It wasn’t ud in our everyday life until recently.
16. According to the article, the BeiDou navigation system is already widely ud for _________.
A. plowing the soil and sowing eds
B. improving the efficiency of networks
C. producing more smart locks for shared bikes
D. navigating ships across oceans to European countries
17. What is Miao Qianjun’s attitud e toward the future of the BeiDou system?
A. worried
B. uncertain
C. positive
D. doubtful
18. Where does the passage probably come from?
