【译文】The Beauty and Charm of Shantou
Situated in a premium area crosd by the Tropic of Cancer and through which the three rivers -- Rongjiang, Hanjiang and Lianjiang flow into the South China Sea, Shantou is a central city in eastern Guangdong province and the southern hub of Haixi Economic Zone.The city has an area of 2,198 square kilometers and a population of 5.58 million people, traditionally known as “the Port of Southern China, the Gateway of Lingdong”.The Chaozhou-Shantou (Chaoshan) culture which dates back thousands of years ago has created a tradition of great respect for talents, learning, education, and arts and crafts: the unique style of Chaozhou opera, Chaozhou cuisine and kungfu tea, the enticing charm of Chaozhou porcelain, paper cutting and wood carving, and the masculine vigor of Yingge Dance, Centipede Dance and Turtle Dance. The centuries-old villages with ancient roads all bear witness to the glorious history and cultural brilliance of Shantou as the gateway for the Maritime Silk Road.

【译文】With the blue bay, green rocks and cliffs as part of the urban center, Shantou has earned its reputation as a “National Garden City”, “Hygienic City” and “Outstanding Tourist City”. It has been vigorously promoting the construction of a national and international model zone with the cultivation and prervation of mangroves and ecological islands so as to create a first-class ecological and livable environment for all.

As a most famous hometown for overas Chine, Shantou has always been an open, inclusive and innovative city, from the gathering of merchants with boats and ships from home and abroad when the port first opened in the 1860s, to the reform and opening up of Shantou as one of the Special Economic Zones in the 1980s, and now the rapid development of the Overas Chine Economic and Cultural Cooperation Zone. Today, over 3.4 million Chaoshan overas Chine, compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and many Chaoshan businessmen working in other parts of China, have all maintained clo emotional ties with their native land and made ardent efforts to promote public good. Mr. Li Ka Shing, for example, has donated more than HK $8 billion to support Shantou University. With his strong advocacy and the support of Guangdong province and Shantou City, the GTIIT (Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology) will start its global recruitment of students this year, firmly committed to the building of an innovative university with a high-level international education in science and technology.
