John Steinbeck (1902-1968), the author of The Grapes of Wrath, was born in Salinas, California. This novel was t in the Great Depression. His awareness of the underclass inspired him to write The Grapes of Wrath, which he published on April14, 1939.

The Grapes of Wrath captures a turbulent moment in American history. It tells a story of the Joad family, featuring the hardship and the oppression suffered by migrant laborers. Tom Joad, the novel’s protagonist and Joad family’s favorite son, releas from an Oklahoma state prison. He takes his way home only to find that all the surrounding farms were derted. Then Tom, with his family and Jim, the pastor, goes to California by an old truck. Before reading this novel, to be frank, I had no idea why I cho this novel as my winter voc
ation reading. Maybe I was just impresd by its name. I thought such a contemporary literature should be filled with sarcasm or black humor just like novels written by O.Henry. But I was wrong.
This novel us many writing techniques and the great symbols leave me a deep impression. For example, the title “grape” is a symbol of hope and abundance. In the novel, the grapes symbolize the dreams of a new life of tho people who go to California with a death-defying spirit. However, when they find everything is out of their expectation, the symbol of grapes turn into bitter and anger. Another example is the tortoi at the beginning of the novel. It reminds me of the stubborn and determined ways of the Joad family and other migrant worker families. Besides, there is also an example in the end of the novel, Sharon’s pregnancy. It symbolizes the promi of a new beginning. Sharon matures considerably when she helps the starving stranger. The symbols make the whole novel all the more striking and profound.

For example, in the novel, it says, “No matter how clever, how loving a man might be with earth and growing things, he could not survive if he were not also a good shopkeeper. And as time went on, the business men had the farms, and the farms grew larger, but there were fewer of them.”

They're the only ones that'll help - the only ones." It means that the poor people remain the purest hearts and generosity. The great spirit of the poor is deeply moving for me.

Nevertheless, it is an adaptation of the novel for the film, which can possibly make my understanding of this novel more profound. The first part of the film version relatively follows the original. But the following parts are different from the book. Even though the film has been partly omitted, it still gave me a unique feeling on this novel. For its gray background, the depressing atmosphere and the characters’ struggling with themlves with their own internal difficulties or resistances to the harsh reality left a deep impression on me.
Most people in the novel show a great courage and confidence towards the difficulties. They just hold the faith that we are the people. As the book says, “We're the people that live. They can't wipe us out; they can't lick us. We'll go on forever, Pa, becau we're the people." Hence, we can know tho people will be fine whether life continues to be a struggle or not.
When I finished it, I also found the whole atmosphere of this novel is dark but inspiring, d
espairing but ambitious, lifeless but hopeful. There are always people who will stand strong, maintain their humanity and help others. I, therefore, felt a kind of dignity and optimism from them. Life is so beautiful that there is always hope so long as you are alive. The Grapes of Wrath gives me a special feeling on life. I like this novel. It indeed derved to be read and has to be read in our life, at least in my life. In the end, let me conclude my writing with the words of wisdom by John Steinbeck: We will go on forever, becau we are the people.
