The presi dent of Janice Tani’s firm asked her, as chief executive of the marketing division, and her staff (three male MBAs) to t up and clo an important contract with a Japane firm. He thought his choice especially good as Janice (a Japane American from California) knew the industry well and could also speak Japane.
As she and her staff were being introduced, Janice noticed a perplexed look on Mr. Yamamoto’s face and heard him repeat “chief executive” to his assistant in an unsure manner. After Janice had prented the merits of the strategy in Japane, referring to notes provided by her staff, she asked Mr. Yamato what he thought. THE IMMIGRA TION OFFICER
Felipe Cordova was a nior official in the Philippines Ministry of Communication. He is proud of the fact that he has been invited to the United States to attend an international conference and is excited at the prospect of his first trip there. Upon entering the United States he has to pass through Immigration and Customs. The immigration officer subjects him to a long ries of questions as to how long he intends to visit relatives, whether he u
nderstands the visa regula tions, and so on. Felipe grows increasingly irritated by the questioning and finally refus to answer any more queries. The officer then calls over the supervisor who leads Felipe away to his office and spends considerable time verifying the authenticity of all his documents before finally allowing him to proceed. Felipe suffers all this with the represd indignation but swears to himlf that he will never return to this uncivilized country.

Jack, a rather boisterous but well-liked American student, shared a room in an international dormitory with a Thai student, Pitchit. They emed to get on fairly well and jack remar ked to one of his American friends how easy Pitchit was to live with compared to with some of his previous roommates, as they emed to have similar routines and interests. However, halfway through the mester Pitchit suddenly announced he had asked for a room transfer and would be moving out next week. Jack was quite upt and puzzled and Pitchit why. At first he was reticent about saying anything, but after persistent questioning he told jack he could not tolerate Jack’s habits—he was always playing loud music, had friends visiting at all hours, and was very disorderly. Jack asked him why he had not told him before as he had not realized he was disturbing Pitchit in any way. Pitchit said nothing.
