of Single Conical Nanopores

A fundamental understanding of the rectification effect in the nanopores and the ion transport near charged surfaces on the nanometer length scale can push towards high performance energy storage devices [1].Typically,nanopores are constructed within polymers,glass,or silica,and have internal and external surfaces that are electri-cally charged.In an electrolyte,the charged surfaces attract counter ions from solution,resulting in the creation of an electric double layer (EDL)that screens the surface charge over a distance that is dependent primarily on the electrolyte concentration,but also the temperature [2].To the conical nanopores in polymers,when the thickness of the EDL is comparable to that of the tip of the conical nanopore,the EDL will influence the ion

In this study,we prepared of single conical nanopores in polyethylene terephthalate (PET)films using single Kr ion hit and chemical etching.The films were irradiated with single Kr ions at the HIRFL microbeam,then the single latent ion track was chemical etched from one side with sodium hydroxid
e solution and a stopping so-lution (1mol/L HCOOH and 1mol/L KCl)that neutralizes the etchant on the other side at 60◦C (Fig.1),in a home-made etching cell.The transmembrane ionic current during the etching process was recorded by a Keithley 6482picoammeter/voltage source.To study the ion conduction of this single conical nanopore in KCl solution,the current-voltage (I −V )characteristic was measured in the same conductivity cell with Ag/AgCl electrodes.A scan-

We studied the influence of electrolyte concentration
on the current rectification.The concentration of KCl
solution ranged from 0.0001to 1mol/L,and the mea-
sured results are shown in Fig.2.Although the current
amplitude incread monotonously with KCl concentra-
tion,the rectification coefficient γreached its maximum

tification behavior is similar to the previous reports [3],
and the mechanism and modeling will be further inves-tigated.
