B A pair of ladies' gloves rests at the bottom of my dresr drawer (抽屉). The gloves are old and worn, and tell many tales.
They belonged to my grandmother.
A cousin said she had found many Grandma's gloves and asked if I would like a pair.
When the packet arrived, I pulled the gloves out of the plastic in which they came from the department store.
They're small, but so was my grandma-small but strong. She was a woman who needed strong hands for cooking dinner and cleaning wooden floors. Being gentle wasn't all that uful for raising nine children, or feeding a hungry group of workers from the field of her farm.
There was a time when all the women wore gloves when they went out. Gloves were part of the dress code (着装标准) of the day-they're everywhere in our old black and white photos.
The gloves in my drawer put a lovely cover on the hands that fed the homeless people who walked through the countryside during the hard time and appeared at my grandma's kitchen door from time to time.
They were the same hands that bid farewell to (告别) two sons going off to war and held the flag prented in memory of the one who didn't return home.
Grandma was a mighty woman The story goes that she drove a young man whom she considered an unsuitable suitor (求婚者) for one of her daughters away with nothing but her hands and a broom (扫帚). He later became a son-in-law.
And when it came to playing the piano, my grandma's hands raced up and down the keys taster than your eyes could e them. She could play any song she heard wonderfully.

Where does the wind come from? What makes the wind move all the time? Scientists tell us that it is the sun that makes it move, and makes it blow. When the sun shines on the earth, it makes the earth hot. Then the earth makes the air hot. When the air becomes hotter, it also becomes lighter. The light air goes up. Cool air comes in to take the place of the hot air. The hot light air goes up higher and higher until it becomes cool. Then it comes down again, and then the earth makes it hot again, and it has to go up. When the air moves, we have wind.

Still in shock! I moved around the hou purpolessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcas (行李箱). Earlier that evening, I’d received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can.” cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our hou was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purpolessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.
时空穿越Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there’s anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn’t know what to ask for.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.
“I’ve come to clean your shoes,” he said.
I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,”he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral (葬礼). Give me all your shoes.”
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himlf to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told mylf to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another. When we returned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining.
I couldn’t help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, “If there’s anything I can do …” Instead I try to think of one specific task that suits that man’s need, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel, or hou-sitting during the funeral. If the person asks, “How did you know I needed that one?” I reply, “Becau a man once cleaned my shoes.”
