But this novel has often been taken as an adventure story by common readers, while critics usually emphasize its portrayal of the capitalist ambition during the beginning stage of the development of capitalism. Both groups of readers tend to overlook its religious, spiritual and moral aspects, which take up a large proportion of the novel. The tension between one’s spiritual needs and one’s materialistic desires, as vividly developed in Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, remains an issue of great significance for our contemporary society. By giving Defoe’s novel a full-sided and in-depth analysis from unique perspectives, this thesis also makes its distinctive contributions to the eighteenth century English novel studies in China. While clo reading rves as the basic method for textual analysis, this thesis receives insights from theoretical perspectives such as Marxist and psychoanalytical, and especially benefits from Max Weber’s discussion of the interaction between “protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism,” with discussion of puritan ethnics and individualism also as a major background. This thesis divides its body into three parts. Part one analyzes Robinson Crusoe’s “original sin”—his sin in disobeying both his earthly father and his heavenly Father (God) in his restless desires of

exploring adventures on the a, which referring to the background of puritan ethics, ri of individualism, and development of capitalism at the turn of the eighteenth century. It also demonstrates how Robinson Crusoe allows himlf to be enslaved by his endless desires for materialistic goods and thus gets endangered by various adventures, in one of which he gets actually enslaved; he also begins his lf-reflection in this fumbling process; Marxist perspective rves as an important background in its discussion. Part two and three, which are the most significant ctions, t forward the moving drama of Robinson Crusoe’s struggle to re-establish a true “lf” on the island, with his on-going lf-reflection and arch for “meanings” in life, finally achieving a balance between his spiritual life and his economic activities; his “stewardship” attitude towards God’s gifts on the island enables him to survive, and even to establish a “kingdom.” Defoe, with a writer’s insights and conscience, address tho important issues for a modern individual: desires, struggle, survival pressure, loneliness, and also efforts to transcend the problems, to achieve a better lf. Therefore, the prent study also hopes to help provoke thinking among Chine intellectuals concerning how to redress our problems created by off-balanced pursuits of materialistic interests.
