Textbooks, though often criticized and ldom praid, are esntial to our college career. They provide core information in easy accessible form. They hold the view that passing the exams is the most important, and learning is incidental. As a result, few students attach much importance to the textbook.)A textbook is a collection of the knowledge, concepts, and principles of a lected topic or a cour. Using textbooks wily enables us to develop the lf learning ability and keep our studying organized and efficient. Some steps to make full u of textbooks are explained below.
First, survey the entire textbook and each chapter. When you first receive your textbook, spend half an hour skimming the entire textbook to acquire an overall understanding of how the book is organized. For example, you should look at the title page and copyright page, read the preface, and look at the table of contents and any illustrations including charts, graphs, and tables. Then you can survey each chapter. The survey should tell you the scope of the content, how the different topics are organized, and what the author’s purpo and point of view are. The chapter survey will also give you sufficient background information for your class notes. As you survey the material, ask yourlf questions about what you are reading and what you will try to answer. This is the first step before reading the book intensively. The cond step is to read each chapter intensively. You should read everything in a chapter including any of the visual aids and try to find the main ideas in each chapter or ction. If you like, underlining key words and ntences will make tho items stand out in your mind, so you will then have a visible outline of the major points on a page. You many also make some marginal notes which give you the opportunity to remember from the paragraph or question a statement or posi
tion from the author. In addition, doing each assignment before class will prepare you to participate in class discussions. In class, teachers will give us some key knowledge and describe what we should know or be able to do. We should be free to ask for an answer if we couldn’t grasp the knowledge, or we have a different idea concerning some statement or theory. After the class, reviewing what we have learnt is an esntial part of retention. Reviewing your textbook notes before beginning a new reading assignment will help you keep the overall picture of the book’s development in mind. You should review any and all supplements to your text, which will prepare you better for examinations. Constantly review throughout the cour will greatly reduce the time you will need to spend preparing for exams and will make that time less stressful and more relaxing.
