(1) The Comma:   
a. before the conjunction in a compound ntence
    b. after an adverbial clau or phra
    c. parate a ries of words or phras
    d. to t off the nonrestrictive claus and phras

(1) The Period: 
a. to end a declarative ntence
    b. with abbreviations
c. to indicate omission by three spaced periods
(2) The Semicolon:
a. between two coordinate claus not linked by a conjunction
b. with conjunctions when the claus have internal punctuation
c.   to parate a ries of items which contain internal punctuation
d. to join a clau with a word or words omitted
(3) The Colon:
a. to introduce an explanation, a summary or an appositive
b. to begin a quotation or a statement
c. time, score, salutation in especially business letters, speech
(4) The Question mark:
a. after a direct question
b. within parenthes indicates the writer’s uncertainty
(5) The Exclamation mark:
a. after an exclamatory ntence
b. after a slogan that express a wish
(6) The Quotation marks:
a. to enclo direct speech
b. for titles of articles, essays, short stories, short poems, songs, etc.
c. to enclo words with a special meaning
note: The colon and the micolon are placed outside the quotation marks.
(7) Parenthes:
a. to t off parenthetical, supplementary, or illustrative matter
b. to enclo figures or letters ud for enumeration
(8) Brackets:
a. to indicate editorial corrections or explanations in quoted matter
b. to replace parenthes within parenthes
(9) The Dash:
a. marks a break in thought or a change in tone
b. to indicate an unfinished or interrupted statement
c. to t off a parenthetical element
d. to introduce a final summarizing clau
e. in a dialogue
f. to introduce subheadings or authors after quotation
(10) The Slash:
a. to indicate alternatives
b. to parate lines in short quotations of poetry being quoted in the context
c. to parate the numerator from the denominator
d. to mean “per”
(11) Italics and underlining:
a. for titles of books, periodicals, newspapers, long poems, etc.
b. to indicate foreign words
c. names of ships or aircrafts and titles of works of art

IV. Punctuation abu:
Chine ntences are paratactic (意合的), while the English ones are hypotactic (形合的). Then, the typical mistake like run-on ntences (comma splices) often happens
EXAMPLES:
1. He won, we laughed.
2. He laughed, I cried.
3. The exam was postponed, the class was cancelled.
4.  It rained all night, the ceiling began to leak.
5. He lifted a rock, it fell on his feet.
6. The steak was too rare, I asked the waiter to take it back to the kitchen.
