Oral English Curriculum
Objective: To create a comfortable environment for students to improve their English
speaking skills.
Grading Rational:
40% : participation in class
30% : mid term exam
30% : final exam
Topics:
Lesson 1: Teacher Introduction
∙ Background information on you
∙ Also ask the students to write down and hand in something about themlves (name, hobby, favorite subject, etc).
∙ Rules and procedures
Lesson 2: Family
∙ Introduction on your family (pictures, description, etc)
∙ Ask students to tell you about their families (i.e. do they have brothers or sisters? Grandparents? Perhaps have them tell you a bit about them)
Lesson 3: One Child Policy
∙ Discuss with the students about the positive and negative aspects of this policy. Give them a few ideas to get started with.
∙ How does it affect the children? How does it affect the society as a whole? Is it still adhered to? What are the conquences of not following the policy?
∙ Put them into groups of pro policy or against the one child policy. Give a few minutes to discuss ideas in their group.
∙ Make sure each group comes up with at least 3 ideas for each side. Have one group prent one of their arguments and then the other group prent one of theirs. Back and forth until neither side has any more ideas.
Lesson 4: Travel
∙ Introduction of places you have been and your travel experiences.
∙ Have the students shout out places they want to go, in the world and in China. Then go over the reasons people go particular places (do you like the beach? Big cities? The mountains? Etc). Then I go around the room and ask each student where they would like to go most and why?
∙ Remind them that they have time, and have money.
Lesson 5: Cultural Differences
∙ Show pictures or clips of documentaries showing very diver cultures (especially ones that are significantly different from either the U.S or China).
∙ Discuss the differences between China and other cultures in terms of: family size, traditions, homes, food sources, energy sources, jobs, entertainment, education, clothing, etc). Pictures should help reinforce this.
Lesson 6: Crazy Weather
∙ Charades for students to act out different kinds of weather.
∙ Put students into two teams. If their team guess correctly, they get a point. If you run out of weather, do regular charades. Make sure to clap after each one… this is tough for them! And you might want to offer a reward for the winner as incentive.
Lesson 7: Heros
∙ Lead a discussion on what attributes makes a hero
∙ Talk about figures like Mao ZeDong, Martin Luther King Jr., etc.. and why they are considered heros.
∙ Then have the students tell the class who their hero or someone they greatly admire is and why.
Lesson 8: Halloween game
∙ Create your own game of Clue. A game where the students are given a mysterious death scenario and have to u the clues to solve it.
∙ Have a stack of clues that one student from each team will alternately read, going down the rows. Write the new clue on the board.
∙ The first team to figure out who the killer is wins.
Lesson 9: Ancient and Modern Superheros and Villains
∙ Describe Greek gods, heros, and monsters.
∙ Have the students describe modern heros like Superman, Spiderman, Batman
∙ Have the students create their own superhero: what does he or she look like, what power does he/she have, who or what is he/she trying to protect, etc?
Lesson 10: A Game of Creative Thinking
∙ Create flash cards of words that the students have learned or ud in previous class.
∙ Each student picks two at random and has to create one ntence.
∙ Difficult, but us creativity and can be really funny.
Lesson 11: Quiz Game: Cultural Relics
∙ Where would you most likely find this thing…
∙ Break students into two teams, one student from each team can come up to the front.
∙ The teacher asks the question (ex: Where would you find the Eiffle Tower or where woul
d you find a kangaroo) and the student to first answer correctly wins a point for his/her team. (tell them to hit the desk when they know the answer, they love that and it gets their attention).
Lesson 12: Olympics and Sports
∙ Ask students to help make a list of traditional Chine sports, and Western/Olympic sports
∙ Review basic vocab (match, game, competion, team, player, etc.)
∙ What is your favorite sport? Player?
∙ What is the significance of 2008 Beijing Olympics?
Lesson 13: Time Capsule
∙ Draw a picture of a box on the board with year 2007 above it. Draw a person with year 2107 above them finding the box and opening the box (to help students understand what
a time capsule is).
