一、年龄:
1) 介词
people at the age of 18
people over/above the age of 18
people under/below the age of 18
people between the ages of 18 and 35
2) aged, 形容词放在名词后边起修饰作用
people aged under 18
people aged between 18 and 35
people aged above 35
3) 从句
people who are over 18 years old
people who are between 18 and 35 years old
二、穷人:
1) 形容词+名词
poor,impoverished (without money没钱), underprivileged
2) the + 形容词
the poor, the impoverished, the underprivileged
3) 名词+非谓语
people living in poverty/destitution
4) 名词+从句限定
people who are economically deprived
people who are destitute
三、表示年轻人、小孩
1) young people
2) the youth
3) youngsters
4) child(ren) = kid
5) adolescent = teenager
四、表示大量
既能修饰可数又能修饰不可数:
1) a host of
2) a multitude of
3) a variety of = various(多种多样的)
4) plenty of (足够的)
5) a plethora of = excessive (过量的)
6) a considerable quantity of sth.
黄色部分的词可以用以下形容词来替换:
appreciable, considerable, enormous, fair, great, huge, large, massive, prodigious, sheer, substantial, vast | minute, modest, small | maximum, minimum | increasing | average | sufficient Gas was detected in sufficient quantity to warrant careful monitoring.
7) multitudinous(数量巨大的、可观的)multitudinous opportunities
只能修饰可数的
a great/ huge/ large/ vast /considerable/ enormous/ substantial number of sth.
只能修饰不可数名词的
a great/huge/large/vast/considerable/enormous/substantial/ massive/ tremendous huge amount of = huge amounts of (大量的,修饰不可数名词)
五、老人
1) old people = elderly people (更文雅)
2) the old = the aged = the elderly
3) nior citizen
4) ageing people/population老龄化人口
5) the grey-haired = the white-haired
old/aged/elderly三个词的区别
1)old使用最广, 可用於人﹑ 动物和事物.
It usually indicates that somebody or something has lived or existed for a long time 这个词通常指生活或存在已久的人或事物: an old woman, dog, church 老的妇人﹑ 狗﹑ 教堂.
It may describe a person who has been known for a long time but is not necessarily old in years 也可用以指早已认识的人, 但不一定年老: She's an old friend of ours. 她是我们的老朋友.
Old can also mean `former' or `previous'*old还可表示‘先前的’或‘早先的’: I was much happier in my old job. 我做我原先的那份工作要带劲得多.
2)Aged is more formal than old and is ud of very old people who have possibly become physically weak.*aged比old文些, 用以指年老的人, 可能身体亦衰弱.
3)If one wishes to be polite and respectful, one can describe old people as elderly. 若想客气些﹑ 尊敬些, 可用elderly来形容老人.
六、对…有好处
1) do good to
2) be beneficial to sth.(就说对……是有好处的,介词只能用to)
Exerci is extremely beneficial to health.
be beneficial for sb. to do sth(说对某人来说做什么是有好处的,介词用for
I think it would be beneficial for each committee member to have a copy of the report.
3) have  positive
        favorable    influences/impacts on sb./sth.
        agreeable
七、对…有坏处
1) do harm to
2) be harmful to = be detrimental to
3) have  negative
        unfavorable    influences/impacts on sb./sth.
        disagreeable
词组:
1) be destitute of sth. = lack sth 缺少某事物
officials who are destitute of ordinary human feelings 毫无感情的官员
2) with the view to doing sth. 为了……
3) with the exception of sth. 除了 = apart from = except for …
4) rather than 前后可以是名词、形容词或动词原形,唯一要求是rather than前后词性一致即可
He likes playing the piano rather than the violin.
He looks angry rather than sad.
He hugs rather than kiss her.
