英语演讲稿作文大全5篇1
Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there was going to be what the press has since reprented as a kind of fairy tale resolution. I had no idea then how far the tunnel extended, and for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a reality.
So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply becau failure meant a stripping away of the inesntial. I stopped pretending to mylf that I was anything other than wha
t I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything el, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was t free, becau my greatest fear had been realid, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.

So given a Time Turner, I would tell my 21-year-old lf that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. Your qualifications, your CV, are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confu the two. Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes.
Now you might think that I cho my cond theme, the importance of imagination, becau of the part it played in rebuilding my life, but that is not wholly so. Though I pers
onally will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp, I have learned to value imagination in a much broader n. Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathi with humans who experiences we have never shared.
One of the greatest formative experiences of my life preceded Harry Potter, though it informed much of what I subquently wrote in tho books. This revelation came in the form of one of my earliest day jobs. Though I was sloping off to write stories during my lunch hours, I paid the rent in my early 20s by working at the African rearch department at Amnesty International’s headquarters in London.
There in my little office I read hastily scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what was happening to them. I saw photographs of tho who had disappeared without trace, nt to Amnesty by their desperate families and friends. I read the testimony of torture vic
tims and saw pictures of their injuries. I opened handwritten, eye-witness accounts of summary trials and executions, of kidnappings and rapes.
Many of my co-workers were ex-political prisoners, people who had been displaced from their homes, or fled into exile, becau they had the temerity to speak against their governments. Visitors to our offices included tho who had come to give information, or to try and find out what had happened to tho they had left behind.
I shall never forget the African torture victim, a young man no older than I was at the time, who had become mentally ill after all he had endured in his homeland. He trembled uncontrollably as he spoke into a video camera about the brutality inflicted upon him. He was a foot taller than I was, and emed as fragile as a child.

It is a commonplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursuing it. This is only true if you pursue it unwily. Gamblers at Monte Carlo are pursuing money, and
most of them lo it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money which often succeed. So it is with happiness. If you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hang-over. Epicurus pursued it by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little chee on feast days. His method proved successful in his ca, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous. For most people, the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life. But I think that whatever personal rule of life you may choo it should not, except in rare and heroic cas, be incompatible with happiness.
There are a great many people who have all the material conditions of happiness, i.e. health and a sufficient income, and who, nevertheless, are profoundly unhappy. In such cas it would em as if the fault must lie with a wrong theory as to how to live. In one n, we may say that any theory as to how to live is wrong. We imagine ourlves more different from the animals than we are. Animals live on impul, and are happy as long as external conditions are favorable. If you have a cat it will enjoy life if it has food an
d warmth and opportunities for an occasional night on the tiles. Your needs are more complex than tho of your cat, but they still have their basis in instinct. In civilized societies, especially in English-speaking societies, this is too apt to be forgotten. People propo to themlves some one paramount objective, and restrain all impuls that do not minister to it. A businessman may be so anxious to grow rich that to this end he sacrifices health and private affections. When at last he has become rich, no pleasure remains to him except harrying other people by exhortations to imitate his noble example. Many rich ladies, although nature has not endowed them with any spontaneous pleasure in literature or art, decide to be thought cultured, and spend boring hours learning the right thing to say about fashionable new books that are written to give delight, not to afford opportunities for dusty snobbism.
