21.(6分)Who's in control of your life? Who's pulling your strings? For the majority of us, it's other people-society, colleagues, friends, family or our community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young,of cour. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it," Most people are
other people. Their thoughts are someone el's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation. "
So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug-we are addicted to it and ek it out wherever we can. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worned lives to keep getting their fix(成瘾物)we worn our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval.
But, just as with any drug. there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom-the freedom to be ourlves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, they're more interested in themlves than in you. Furthermore, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to plea everyone will only end up getting exhausted (tired) and probably pleasing no one in the process.
So how can we take back control? I think there's only one way-make a conscious decision to stop ca
ring what other people think. We should guide ourlves by means of a t of values- not values impod from the outside by others. but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by the values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others. we will live a more authentic, effective, purpoful and happy life.

3、It can be concluded from the passage that .
A.it's better to follow others' opinions
B.it's important to accept others' comments
C.we shouldn't change our own decision
D.we shouldn't care too much what others think
4、The author tries to persuade the readers to accept his arguments mainly by .
A.discussing questions B.making suggestions

22.(8分)Do dogs understand us?
Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think.
A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say rearchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as tho of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩).
In one experiment, the rearchers took all 200 items that Rico is suppod to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't e anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words.
In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never en before and put it in a room with ven toys who names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before.
The correct object was chon in ven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive.
Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months.
It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. Y ou might just get a big, wet kiss in return!

23.(8分)Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cau of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time – about eight hours after you wake up – your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in the experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people take naps(小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Rearchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problem such as heart dia.
Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advi taking n
aps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.
1、Why do people feel sleepy in the early afternoon according to the text?
A.They eat too much for lunch.
B.They sleep too little at night.
C.Their body temperature becomes lower.
D.The weather becomes a lot warmer.
2、If you get up at 6:30 am, what is the best time for you to take a nap?
