SPECIFICATIONS FOR TEM4
Test Purpo
The aim of the test is, firstly, to have a comprehensive examination of the students’ achievement of the requirments t forth in the teaching syllabus for TEM4, and condly, to asss students’ ability to apply various basic skills as well as their mastery of grammar structure and word usage, which is to test both students’ comprehensive ability and their individual skills. The test is at the same time a means of evaluating the quality of teaching and promoting inter-school communication.
Text Domain
Theoretical Construct:
students’ ability of listening and writing as well as grammatical knowledge and vocabulary corresponding to the teaching syllabus.
Operations:
1)Dictation
a) be able to write down the whole passage in condition of fully understanding the content.
2)Listening Comprehension
a) be able to understand the speech and talk about daily life or social life of English speaking countries ,then ize the main argument or plots and make reasoning and analysis on the listening materials.
b) be able to understand the main content of VOA or BBC news.
3)Cloze
a) be able to fully understand the content of the essay and lect the best answer to make the article complete both in meaning and structure.
4)Grammar and Vocabulary
a) be able to u the grammar structures range from level one to level four correctly.
b)be able to master 3000—4000 of the vocabulary of 5500—6500 as required in the syllabus.
5)Reading Comprehension
a) be able to read the medium-difficulty articles and materials of British and American countries.
b) be able to understand the main idea.
c) be able to understand the material literally as well as perform judgment and inference in the deeper meaning.
d)be able to deduce the meaning of an unknown word from the context.
6)Writing
a)be able to write an essay of about 150 words according to the given topic, chart or digital statistics; be able to write a note of 50—60 words corresponding to the tips.
b)be able to u punctuation and spell words correctly.
c)be able to write correct and appropriate ntences.
d)be able to manipulate ntence and paragraphs effectively.

Students in Grade 2 of English majors.
Test Content
1)Dictation
short passages or general introductions of history, society and culture, science, geography, etc.
2)Listening Comprehension
conversations in daily life, formal speeches, brief introduction of a person, a thing or a new concept, etc.
3)Cloze
short passages about history, society, culture, science, geography, etc.
4)Grammar and Vocabulary
ntences or very short dialogues.
5)Reading Comprehension
short stories, newspaper articles, instructions, reports, etc.
6)Writing
1 )notes expressing thanks, congratulation, apology, etc
2 )discussions of hot issues, social phenomenon, personal opinions, etc
Focus:
Test tasks or items should be designed in accordance with the syllabus of the test, meanwhile the aim is to check students’ knowledge, comprehension and other specific skills which are required for students majoring in English.

1)Dictation
One passage of about 150 words.
2)Listening Comprehension
Section A: Conversations
10 conversations of about 200 words each.
Section B: Passages
10 passages of about 200 words each.
Section C: News Broadcast
10 pieces of news from BBC or VOA.
3)Cloze
One passage of about 250 words.
4)Grammar and Vocabulary
15 multiple choices on grammar .
15 multiple choices on vocabulary and phra usage.
5)Reading Comprehension
4 or 5 passages of totally 1800 words.
6)Writing
Section A: Composition
One composition of about 200 words.
Section B: Note-Writing
One note of 50-60 words.
Test Method
Discrete-point test and integrative test are ud in combination with emphasis on the latter.

Time Duration
The test should be completed within 140 minutes.
Writing and dictation takes 60 minutes.
Listening comprehension, cloze, grammar and vocabulary, reading comprehension takes totally 80 minutes.
