很多学⽣在STSs中告诉我，他们⼗分担⼼英语测验，问我应该如何准备。我为了使他们放⼼，就⼜说了⼀遍测验的范围，并强调我的教学法的好处。
TEACHER'S
Dear students，
Some of you are very worried about English tests. You don't need to be. Paper III is totally unen. As for paper II， there will be about 120 questions. 20-30 questions are concerned with the things you have learnt from units one and two of A Modern Cour. If you spend a lot of time going through all the exercis in New Exercis in English， it will be a great waste of time. It is not worth it. Moreover， we shall also give you some materials to help you prepare for the exam. Take it easy， boys and girls. Besides， you should aim at getting a good result in the Certificate Exam instead of school tests. Do you remember what I told you—in the Cert. Exam？ There will be only a few questions about tens. Well， I don't mean this can apply to all of you becau I know some of you never worry about the tests. Some have too much confidence while others have already given up.
Actually， I don't mean that tens are not important but that the ways of teaching tens in many grammar books are not good enough. For example， it is important to teach students when to u a ge
rund and when to u an infinitive with “to”。 I did it but in a way easier for you to understand.
I am happy to tell you that Fanny Ng in 4D has promid to join our STS
programme. Let's welcome her. Fanny extended her hearty congratulations to us on winning the notice-board design contest. I would like to thank her for her kindness. I will also try to invite Ivy Hung in her class to join us becau both of them are very much interested in communicative writing. Of cour I have to assure them that I won't disclo their crets， if any. As for解作“⾄于”。
留意正确⽤法：
●there is（⼀般现在时）√
●there will be（⼀般将来时）√
●there will have×
are concerned with可⽤are relatedto代替。
learnt 也可拼写为learned
going through跟reading或studying的意思相同。
It is not worth it的意思是“不值得这样做”。也可写作It is not worth the trouble.

help you prepare和help you to prepare两者皆是对的。
aim at之后需加动名词（即动词加-ing）。
instead of可⽤rather than代替。
becau的同义词句括：as、for及since.
confidence（解作“信⼼”）是不可数名词，因此：
●much confidence√
●little confidence√
●many confidence×
●few confidence×
I did it跟I have done it的意思相近。
这⾥的happy可⽤plead或glad代替。
extended可写作offered.
congratulation通常⽤复数。⽽on与congratulate/congratulations连⽤。
以下不同句型都是对的：
●…are very interested in…
●…are very much interested in…
●…show great interest in…
assure them that跟promi themthat的意思相近，解作“向他们保证”。
这⾥的if any的意思是：if there areany crets.
wedding≠marriage
marriage解作“婚姻”，是较抽象的名词。⽽wedding是“婚礼/结婚（过程）”。
Should you have any good ideas的意思是If you have any good ideas.

Memorizing ntence structure ＆ phras
现代教育理念并不⿎励学⽣死记硬背，以免导致“被动”教育。这种理念基本上是正确的，但当学⽣们明⽩了某些词语或句⼦的意思和⽤途后，不妨花点⼯夫把那些词语或句⼦记下来。因为有些英语句⼦跟汉语句⼦的结构相距太远，若学⽣们不多花点⼯夫把它们记下来，恐怕⼏天后便忘得⼀⼲⼆净。请
看本单元的例⼦。
