A Run to Remember
Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body. I also had to deal with my parents’ bitter divorce, a new family and the uptting move from my country home to a crowded suburb.
When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony(小马), had to be sold.
Feeling helpless and alone, I couldn’t eat or sleep, and I cried all of the time. I misd my fam乙肝疫苗接种时间 ily, my home and my pony. Finally, my father, realizing how much I misd my pony, purchad an old red hor for me at a local market.
My hor, Cowboy, was without a doubt the ugliest hor in the world. He was pigeon-toed and knock-kneed. But I didn’t care about 鸦片战争的意义 his faults. I loved him beyond all reasons.
I joined a riding club and faced rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on how I felt, but deep down inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode bea武汉周边 utiful registered hors.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the hor is judged on appearance, we were quickly out of the game. I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the timed-speed events. I cho barrel racing(绕桶赛), an event in which a hor and its rider attempt to complete a triangular pattern around three barrels in the fastest time.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown hor in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.
The bitter memory of Becky’s smirks(得意的笑)made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month, I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(运动场地). We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home. On the way home I would be so tired; tho five miles emed twice as long.
All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her hor charge through the pattern of barrels, finishing the cour with ca.
My turn finally came. As I urged Cowboy forward, he stumbled, and almost fell, much to the delight of the other riders. I jammed my hat down on my head, stroked Cowboy's big red neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first barrel, quickly whipped around it and with perfect precision rounded the cond and thundered on to the third. We tore around the final curve and shot for the finish line.No cheers filled the air when I finished my show. The end of our run was met with surprid silenceWith the sound of my heart pounding in my ears, I heard the announcer call our time. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her proud fancy hor! I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that I'd always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the master of my own destiny.
During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time the things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of tho times, I was on the side of the road for clo to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a ction out of a big log(圆木)on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
