The animals came around him. When they saw that he was going to die, they

thought to themlves, "Now is the time to pay him back."

So the boar came up and rushed at him with his tusks.

Then a bull gored him with his horns. The lion still lay helpless before them.

So the ass felt quite safe. He turned his tail to the lion and kicked up his heels

"This is a double death." growled the lion.

4 狮和鼠(THE LION AND THE MOUSE)

Lion was awakened from sleep by a Mou running over his face. Rising up in an

ger, he caught him and was about to kill him, when the Mou piteously entreated, s

aying： “If you would only spare my life, I

would be sure to repay your kindness.” The Lion laughed and let him go.

It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters, who bound

as yet my mother′s milk is both food and drink to me.” On which the Wolf ized him,

and ate him up, saying, “Well！ I won′t remain supperless, even though you refute

every one of my imputations.”The tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny.

A cock, scratching in the farmyard for food for the hens, turned up a precious

stone that shone and sparked in the sun.

"Well," said the Cock, "I don’t know what you are doing here. You are a very

beautiful thing, and no doubt if your owner found you he would be delighted, but

you are no good to me. I would rather have one grain of delicious barley than all the

the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it

in pieces. They each tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it.

He next unclod the faggot, and took the sticks parately, one by one, and

again put them into their hands, on which they broke them easily. He then addresd

them in the words: "My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other,

you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you

are divided among yourlves, you will be broken as easily as the sticks."

12 小马过河 (How a Colt Crosd the River)

One day, a colt took a bag of wheat to the mill.

As he was running with the bag on his back, he came to a small river. The colt

could not decide whether he could cross it. Looking around, he saw a cow grazing

nearby. He asked, "Aunt Cow, could you tell me if I can cross the river?" The cow told

him that he could and that the river was not very deep, just knee high.

The colt was crossing the river when a squirrel jumped down a tree and stopped

him. The squirrel shouted, "Colt, stop! You'll drown! One of my friends drowned just

yesterday in the river." Not knowing what to do, the colt went home to consult his

mom.

He told his mom his experience on the way. His mother said, "My child, don't

always listen to others. You'd better go and try yourlf. Then you'll know what to

do."

Later, at the river, the squirrel stopped the colt again. "Little hor, it's too

dangerous!"

"No, I want to try mylf", answered the colt. Then he crosd the river

carefully.

On the other side of the river, the colt realized that the river was neither as

shallow as the cow said nor as deep as the squirrel told him.

一天，小马驮着麦子去磨坊。

13 口渴的乌鸦

A crow, ready to die with thirst, flew with joy to a pitcher which he saw at军队保密条例 a

15鸽子和蚂蚁The dove and the ant

An ant was drinking at a river. Suddenly he slipped, and fell into the water.

A dove took pity on him. She threw a small branch into the river. The ant ized

the bough, and swam back to the shore.

A few days later, the ant saw a hunter aiming a gun at the dove. He bit the man

in the foot sharply.

The man misd the shot, and the dove's life was saved.

The dove felt very grateful. She made good friends with the ant.

When Peter went home, his father asked him what he had learned at school.

The next morning at school, the teacher asked Peter if he had learned the three

She, She is your mother; You, You are my son."

17袋鼠与笼子(Kangaroos and the Cage)

One day the staff members of a zoo called a meeting to discuss the probl生活中的化学现象 em--

me.”

be！
