whether 和 if 都可以作“是否”解，但二者在详细使用时有肯定的区分。

He asked me whether/if we wanted a drink. 他问我们是否要喝点东西。

He didn’t know whether/if she was a nur. 他不知道她是否是一位护士。

但在有些动词后多用whether 不用if。如:

We discusd whether we should clo the shop. 我们争论了是否该关闭那家商店。(比用 if 正规)

当使用 if 会引起歧义时应用whether 。如: “我不知道是否在下第 3 页/共 6

雪”应译为I don’t know whether it is snowing, 而不说I don’t know if it

is snowing(由于if也可表示条件)。

另外，whether 引导的从句的谓语动词不能用否定形式，但 if 引导的从句的谓语可以用否定形 式。如:

Idon’t care whether it doesn’t rain. (错误)

Idon’t care if it doesn’t rain.(正确)

Let me know whether you can come or not. 告知我你来还是不来。

Iwonder whether it is big enough or not. 我不知道它是否够大。

当然，在口语中有时也说“if you can come or not”，但whether后面可以直接跟or not, if后则不行。如上句可改为:

Let me know whether or not you can come.

There was a big argument about whether we should move to a new

hou. 关于我们是否应搬新家发生了激烈的争辩。

It depends on whether the letter arrives in time. 这取决于信是否来得准时。

Icannot decide whether to get married now or wait. 我不能打算是该现在就结婚还是等待。

引导表语从句时，只有在特殊非正式的语体中可用if。如:
