In our daily lives, we have many choices to make, such as
what to eat forsupper, what clothes to wear, or what to do on
weekends. at certain times in ourlives, we need to make even
more critical choices, such as which school toattend, what job to
take or who to choo as husband or wife. yes, life is amatter of
choice. emimgly, it means a choice of tangible things. but
inesnce, it means choosing a way of life. life is to be lived,
savored, andenjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.
Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the
grave threat fromthe life-and-death dia--sars. yet, even
during tho dreadful times, someafflicted people remained
optimistic. instead of wearing neutral white masks, some people
turned to colouful ones, and thus display a happy mood. and
somecreative people dubbed sars to mean "smile and remain
smiling." i was deeplytouched by their optimisim, nearly
forgetting that we're still in a who survive the
kinds of circumstances, (at some point)decide in theirminds to
carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds.
Laid-off workers, typically regarded as the victims of
economicadvancement, are subject to desperation that being
unmeployed has brought onthem. but, encouragingly, we have
witnesd some of them striving hard torebuild confidence
toward life and discover new opportunities for
demonstratingtheir values.
Although we cannot choo our appearance, inborn gifts
and even avoidunexpected disasters and adversities, we do have
the privilege to choo to liveoptimistcally,to love our lives, to
have dreams, and to cherish hopes.
Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we
want to approachlife that day. as for me, i choo to be cheerful.

My Attitude towards to Marks
For our students, marks is above everything. Teachers will
judge us from ourmarks. With marks we can be enrolled into
junior middle schools. With marks, wecan be enrolled into
nior middle schools. With marks we can be enrolled intocollege.
With marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctrine
with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go
abroad for furtherstudies. Our parents will be strict with us with
the marks. Our society judge usfrom marks. However,
sometimes we students compare one another with marksdirectly.
We are completely controlled by marks. We like them and we feel
sorryfor them. But what attitude towards our marks should we
take?
Truly, marks functions cannot be underestimated. In terms
of test in ourstudy, marks are fair and real. That is the reason
why we say "Everyone is equalbefore marks. "
However, I think marks are the sole standard to judge the
success or failureof students in exams. Sometimes, marks more
than ten or less than one or two inour exams comparing with
others mean not everything. The success or failure inexams will
be influenced by experience on the spot and the examinee’s
healthetc. Once in a while one cannot fail in exams. " Success or
failure is commonn for military. " I think everyone is familiar
with the famous saying. Don’tyou think such will be the ca
with our study? In exams, one cannot be "never-defeated
general" . Even though one will be very good in everyday study,he cannot succeed in every exam sometimes. We can get proof
from the fact thatthe very best one we call "Number One Scholar"
in the entrance exams for collegeand ordinary middle school and
specialized condary school over the years isnot eminent above
all others nor top student in every study.
As a matter of fact, "high marks" and "ability" are not
unified. Some timeago, a new phra " high marks but poor
competence" came into being. Once Ihappened to meet such a
teacher as this .It is said that the teacher justgraduated from a
far-famed key university. But his teaching result is much lessthan
that of the one who just graduated from a not-well-renowned
college. Whenlecturing, the teacher only repeated what the
text-books says, which was verydull so the his students’
interest in learning was not aroud. His teaching wasshort of
unity of teaching and learning. At prent there is a fact that we
knowa few brilliant and top college graduates are not qualified
for their posts. Thereason for it may be lack of the ability to
combine knowledge learnt from bookswith pragmatics in their
work. Students of this kind will be successful in everyexam but
they will be able to u freely their knowledge in their posts.
Don’tyou think it waste training such persons for the country?
To sum up from the above, I can say marks are not
absolutely authoritativefor some. If we neglect training and
developing the students’ ability andcompetence and if we only
ek for the high marks, we will be absolutely should
take an objective attitude towards the marks. Neither should
weneglect them nor should we overvalue them like a God.

Accept the Gift from Life
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Today I’m glad that I’m standing here talking to you all.
As the title given,I am going to talk you about a way of treating
people and things in life. Myspeech here basically includes 2
parts, in the former of which I‘ll describe youthe prent
occasion we teenagers are in., as well as the reason behind.
Thenit’s about the veral opinions of mine toward the ca
above.
Undoubtedly, every one of us has stepped into
adolescence, a period of timewhere the most
exciting and mysterious changes take place. Boys,
apparently become moreambitious. Girls, in some ways, start
to dream and become more nsitive aboutthe world. All in all,
as if our emotions become much stronger, somehow
we’realways trapped in circles and struggling against
something that can’t be changedanyway. We complain about
how fragile our friendship is, how little people knowabout us,
how unfair the life is,etc. It ems that every time we fail, we
blameit to the tough conditions we’re in, while never notice a
problem insideourlves, that we’re never satisfied.
Let’s just imagine that there was an old lady. What she es
was herneighbors’ being mean again while not how kind they
were when they took care ofher sick body. What she saw was her
dog’s annoying barking while not how muchloyalty it had
she saw was always so depressing that it
finallyturned her into an unpleasant person. Think about how our
life would be if westand in her shoe.
Why don’t we focus our attention on how much we’ve
already got in stead? Youknow it’s really simple to do as
there’s a tremendous amount of examples. Likethe popular
Jetpack Joy Ride on your Iphone, you can enjoy it whenever you
like, whereas in some poor area people don’t even know such
thing as Iphone.
Actually we should be thankful about the richness we’ve
got, thankful thatwith each sunri taking place we don’t need
to starve to call it a day, thankful that the people we love are still
in health, that we still got much tohold on. As a saying on
website,” The world is tough, but I’m tougher.”
Whatdoesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
Every day is a gift from life, all we need is to accept it,
cherish thelessons life has taught us, so as to achieve our goal
with high spirit. In thisway, someday when we leave the world,
we leave no regrets.
Thank you for listening.

Distinguished judges, teachers, dear friends:
Hello, everyone! My name is cheng xiang yan , I am a junior
student come from life science institution .Today, I am very glad
to stand here and share with you my most sincere speech‘Flying
youth, master our future!’
Life is a process of growing up. Saying goodbye to childhood,
we step into another important time of life in the pace of young,
facing new situations, dealing with
However, who can really say what the youth is ? A period of
time? A belief? An attitude to life? Or anything el? actually,
everyone has his ownunderstanding of young, it is a period of
time of beauty and wonders, only after you have experienced the
sour , sweet ,bitter and salty, can you really become a person of
significance.
Just like A famous poet said ‘ youth is a lovely song ,where
nothing is impossible ,youth is a meaningful book, you’ll be
never bored of it ;youth is a rapid river ,it keeps on flowing day
and night ;youth is a cup of tea ,it shows you different kinds of
tastes in your life. ’
As youth is so precious, of cour, we must treasure it .Don’t
let the limited time pass by, grasping the young will means a
better time is waiting for you in the near future.
So,It’s necessary for us to prepare ourlves well for the
future to come. having a view on tho great men in the history
of hunman being, they all made full u of their youth time to do
things that are uful to society, to the whole mankind, and as a
conquence ,they are remembered by later generations,
admired by everyone. so do something in the time of young,
although you may not get achievements as the greatmen
did ,though not for the whole world, just for youelf, for tho
around!
So, what should we do when we are young? Here,I’ll point
out some tips to help equip ourlves.
First of all, think of what you’d like to be some day. A
teacher ? A doctor ? A writer? Don’t afraid of dreaming of big
and great .Since you are young , you can dream of doing anything
and becoming anyone in the future.
What’s more , never ignore the power of knowledge. Read
more books and travel around. For one thing, it can increa your
knowledge, for another, it’ll broaden your horizon.
Last but not the least , stick to your dream. It easier said than
done. After all, future is not all ros. young is just like blooming
flowers, they are so beautiful when blooming, which make people
feel happy, but with time passing by, after they withers ,most
people think they are ugly. and so it is the same with young, we
are enthusiastic when we are young, then we may lo our
passion when getting older and older. So we should have enough
courage and determination to overcome all the difficulties in
struggling on the road.
I firmly believe one ntence that‘If you think you can, of
cour you can!’Just believe we can make it! Keep on walking
towards our dream. Flying youth , master our future. From today,
from now on , are you Ready ?
That’s all. Thank you so much for your attention !

What College Education Means to Me
the title of my speech is “what college education means to
me”.now reflecting on the past two and half years of my college
experience, i come to realize how much it has shaped me.
for me, college education is a marvelous ship-builder who
designed me from kneel plates up.
with great vision, college education has equipped me, first
with a powerful propeller----the sophisticated knowledge in
certain field and wide exposure to other disciplines. by
dedicating mylf to the engineering cours in the day and
immersing mylf in the rich banquet of the world literature at
night, i’ve amasd the driving force for the future and enriched
my soul.
besides, college education has also provided me with a
preci compass----the n of social responsibility. how can i
best rve the interest of the public while achieving my lf-fulfillment? my one year’s experience as a part-time english
teacher has testified: to be valuable to society as well as to find
my place, i have to posss some actual strength and the ability
to function well in the most challenging situation. amid the hectic
schedule that balances club activities, sports, and academic
cours, i feel the rhythm and beauty in the intensity of my high-pitched life, knowing that i ’m on the right way.
and more importantly, college education has t up not only
single ships, but also fleets with common destinations. by
interacting with friends of common beliefs, i’ve acquired skills
of relating to other people.
now ,as a ship about to make my maiden voyage ,i’m still
not in the position to tell what’s waiting ahead of me ,but with
a powerful propeller, a preci compass and ardent companions
of sailing in the a of society, i’m ready to be a great a-explorer.
thank you.

My Views on Receiving Education
In my early years, I did not e the value of education.
When I was going on thirteen, I started to run my own shop.
From then on, I worked hard to become a successful
businessman.
One day I realized the importance of the English language in
the business world and started taking night class.
I was able to communicate well with foreign customers after
two years of English study. But I started to feel that, in the long
run, having a limited knowledge of English was not enough to
make my business successful. I knew that only a well- rounded
education could guarantee my success in the future.
When I was eighteen, I had to make a decision to continue
doing business or go back to school. There was one obstacle
keeping me from getting an advanced education. I had only
completed elementary school up to that point. I then went back
to nior high school after four months of tutoring in different
subjects. Being at school for the first time after so many years
was somewhat embarrassing becau my classmates were at
least two or three years younger than I. I concluded that my age
did not matter. The important thing was getting into college.
I took the College Entrance Exams. Although my math exam
result was only one point below the required score. I never gave
up hope. The following year, I took it again and received the
highest score in my city. Achieving such an amazing result gave
me encouragement and courage necessary to continue my
education to the next step.
I am now in my cond year of college and know that it is
never too late to learn. My passion for studying and improving
mylf will never come to a halt as long as I continue to live.
“Live and Learn.” is the motto I have adopted. I believe with
an education I will succeed. So, if you are wondering whether
education is important, don’t hesitate a moment to step up and
ize the opportunity.

when i was nine years old i went off to summer camp for the
first time. and my mother packed me a suitca full of books,
which to me emed like a perfectly natural thing to do. becau
in my family, reading was the primary group activity. and this
might sound antisocial to you, but for us it was really just a
different way of being social. you have the animal warmth of your
family sitting right next to you, but you are also free to go
roaming around the adventureland inside your own mind. and i
had this idea that camp was going to be just like this, but better.
(laughter) i had a vision of 10 girls sitting in a cabin cozily reading
books in their matching nightgowns.
(laughter)
camp was more like a keg party without any alcohol. and on
the very first day our counlor gathered us all together and she
taught us a cheer that she said we would be doing every day for
the rest of the summer to instill camp spirit. and it went like this:
“r-o-w-d-i-e, that's the way we spell rowdie. rowdie, rowdie, let's
get rowdie.“ yeah. so i couldn't figure out for the life of me why
we were suppod to be so rowdy, or why we had to spell this
word incorrectly. (laughter) but i recited a cheer. i recited a cheer
along with everybody el. i did my best. and i just waited for the
time that i could go off and read my books.
but the first time that i took my book out of my suitca, the
coolest girl in the bunk came up to me and she asked me, “why
are you being so mellow?“ -- mellow, of cour, being the exact
opposite of r-o-w-d-i-e. and then the cond time i tried it, the
counlor came up to me with a concerned expression on her
face and she repeated the point about camp spirit and said we
should all work very hard to be outgoing.
and so i put my books away, back in their suitca, and i put
them under my bed, and there they stayed for the rest of the
summer. and i felt kind of guilty about this. i felt as if the books
needed me somehow, and they were calling out to me and i was
forsaking them. but i did forsake them and i didn't open that
suitca again until i was back home with my family at the end of
the summer.
now, i tell you this story about summer camp. i could have
told you 50 others just like it -- all the times that i got the
message that somehow my quiet and introverted style of being
was not necessarily the right way to go, that i should be trying to
pass as more of an extrovert. and i always nd deep down that
this was wrong and that introverts were pretty excellent just as
they were. but for years i denied this intuition, and so i became a
wall street lawyer, of all things, instead of the writer that i had
always longed to be -- partly becau i needed to prove to mylf
that i could be bold and asrtive too. and i was always going off
to crowded bars when i really would have preferred to just have
a nice dinner with friends. and i made the lf-negating choices
so reflexively, that i wasn't even aware that i was making them.
now this is what many introverts do, and it's our loss for sure,
but it is also our colleagues' loss and our communities' loss. and
at the risk of sounding grandio, it is the world's loss. becau
when it comes to creativity and to leadership, we need introverts
doing what they do best. a third to a half of the population are
introverts -- a third to a half. so that's one out of every two or
three people you know. so even if you're an extrovert yourlf,
i'm talking about your coworkers and your spous and your
children and the person sitting next to you right now -- all of
them subject to this bias that is pretty deep and real in our society.
we all internalize it from a very early age without even having a
language for what we're doing.

Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before
meeting the right one so that when we finally meet the right
person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift.
When the door of happiness clos, another opens, but often
times we look so long at the clod door that we don't e the
one which has been opened for us.
The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch and
swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it
was the best conversation you've ever had.
It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lo it,
but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing
until it arrives.
Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that
they'll love you back! Don't expect love in return; just wait for it
to grow in their heart but if it doesn't, be content it grew in yours.
It takes only a minute to get a crush on someone, an hour to like
someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to
forget someone.
Don't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth;
even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile
becau it takes only a smile to make a dark day em bright.
Find the one that makes your heart smile.

Sports are more than competitions. To me, they mean
growth under the care of others. I learned this the hard way.
I ud to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well
in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of physical education.
My classmates often laughed at me.
“Look at that girl,” they said. “Her feet don’t leave the
ground when she runs!”
Their words embarrasd me. Moreover, whenever the
teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class
liked to have me as their partner or team member. As a result, I
often ended up looking at others enjoy their games.
Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my
high school. By mistake, my name was put on the list of tho
who would compete in the women’s 1500 meters race. By the
time people found the mistake, it was too late to change.
My desk-mate was a natural athlete. She said to me, “I
couldn’t run that race in your place, becau I’ve signed up for
three items already.” Other athletic girls of the class said the
same.
I was utterly dumbfounded. 1500 meters! Running against
the best runners from other class! And in front of students of
the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare I’d ever have!
“You still have time to catch up becau there is still one
month before the sports meet,” they all said this to me,
including my teacher.
My desk-mate patted me on the shoulder, “Cool! You will
run for our class! And we will do training together.” Yes, this is
not just for mylf, but for my class too, I said to mylf. But still,
1500 meters to me was like Mount Everest to a beginning climber.
I had no idea even how to start my preparation.
Fortunately, my desk-mate gave me a hand. Every afternoon
after class, veral of us ran together. When the fear of being
laughed at struck me, I saw others running right beside me. They
gave me strengths. While we were running, some others would
stand by the tracks cheering for us.
One month certainly couldn’t make me a good runner. But
when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely
or afraid. I saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at
me as if about to run beside me.
With the shot of the starting gun, I dashed out and ran as
fast as I could, as if it were a 200-meter race. Soon I was out of
breath and slowed down. Other runners pasd me one by one,
and gradually I had no idea how many of them were still behind
me. My legs were getting heavier and heavier, and I might fall
down at any moment. However, I suddenly heard my classmates
chanting my name. My desk-mate even ran along the tracks
beside me and cheered for me at the same time, just like the
month-long training we did together.
As expected, I was almost the last to cross the finish line.
Immediately, my classmates held my arms and urged me to walk
on my feet and not to sit down. I was surrounded, with all kinds
of drinks handed to me. I felt a kind of warmth I had never felt
before. Even though I was almost the last to finish the race, I was
full of confidence that I would improve in the future.
That sports meet was an unforgettable experience. The
memory of my classmates cheering for me, holding my arms and
handing me drinks stays fresh on my mind. Sports are no longer
about winning or losing. They give me a lot of confidence, both
confidence in my fellow students and confidence in my own
potential. I am no longer lonely, no longer afraid. Sports have
brought me clo to my classmates and helped us grow together.
Now, I participate in the sports meet every year. Even if I am
not competing, I would help my classmates with their practice,
just like the way my desk-mate and others ran with me.

i have the answer to a question that we've all asked. the
question is, why is it that the letter x reprents the unknown?
now i know we learned that in math class, but now it's
everywhere in the culture -- the x prize, the x-files, project x, tedx.
where'd that come from?
about six years ago i decided that i would learn arabic, which
turns out to be a supremely logical language. to write a word or
a phra or a ntence in arabic is like crafting an equation,
becau every part is extremely preci and carries a lot of
information. that's one of the reasons so much of what we've
come to think of as western science and mathematics and
engineering was really worked out in the first few centuries of the
common era by the persians and the arabs and the turks.
this includes the little system in arabic called al-jebra. and al-jebr roughly translates to “the system for reconciling disparate
parts.“ al-jebr finally came into english as algebra. one example
among many.
the arabic texts containing this mathematical wisdom finally
made their way to europe -- which is to say spain -- in the 11th
and 12th centuries. and when they arrived there was tremendous
interest in translating this wisdom into a european language.
but there were problems. one problem is there are some
sounds in arabic that just don't make it through a european voice
box without lots of practice. trust me on that one. also, tho very
sounds tend not to be reprented by the characters that are
available in european languages.
here's one of the culprits. this is the letter sheen, and it makes
the sound we think of as sh -- “sh.“ it's also the very first letter
of the word shalan, which means “something“ just like the the
english word “something“ -- some undefined, unknown thing.
now in arabic, we can make this definite by adding the
definite article “al.“ so this is al-shalan -- the unknown thing.
and this is a word that appears throughout early mathematics,
such as this 10th century derivation of proofs.
