在弗雷德看来，面试进行得很顺利。五天前他曾向一家小公司申请工作，此刻那公司的一名董事正在对他进行面试。
在这之前弗雷德一直在当推销员。他此刻想调工作并非是因为缺钱，而是因为作为一名推销员他几乎没有空闲的时间。
弗雷德在谈话前很担忧，生怕头脑发昏说错话，可是很幸运他发现自己同这位董事的一路的地方颇多。
显然这位董事很满意。合法弗雷德在想着自己极可能取得工作时，董事接着问他：“你愿意加班吗?”

I have tried veral times to talk my wife into throwing away everything that is no longer needed, but each time she disagrees, arguing with great conviction that they will amount to a large sum of money.
Now there is so much junk in our hou that perhaps the family had better move out so as to make room for more junk.

最使我满意的一次交谈是十年前在巴黎同一名年轻的荷兰人的交谈。不记得咱们究竟谈了些什么，只记得我不懂荷兰语，他不懂汉语。很幸运，咱们都能讲一些法语。我设法同他说法语，但突然我发现自己在找一个等同于“大约”的法语词。我怎么也想不起那个词了。可是我却记起了相应的德语词，我用了“Ungefahr”这个词。他知道我的意思。接着咱们就用法语和德语混杂着交谈。后来发现咱们还都能说几句西班牙语。在整个交谈中咱们毫不费力地用西班牙语、法语和德语将各自要表达的意思讲给对方听。
