More than 40 years ago, my venth grade English teacher by telling us that we were absolutely not allowed to read “The Catcher the Rye” becau we weren’t “ready” for it. So naturally we all went out and read it immediately.
I told this story to my son when he was a venth grader. I meant it as a funny story, and I pointed out that it had taken me years to appreciate that teacher’s pedagogic strategy. But then my son read the book himlf right away. The mere long-ago echoo (回音) of a possible ban was enough to breathe life to his reading.
