And point out the implications of this study. Finally, the paper will give a conclusion. 开学第一周作文I really learn lots of previously unknown knowledge about foreigners’ characters through this paper.
Key words电脑d盘: English character; reason; implication
1. Introduction
The meaning of character is all the qualities and features that make a person, groups of people, and places different from others. Characters, on the one hand, play an important role in our daily life. And on the other hand, exhibit some kind of change---of attitude, of purpo, of behavior.
The English national character is dualistic: One aspect is conrvative, the other extroverted. The pub is a fine example of the conrvative aspect of English character. The pub, unlike the bar in the U.S., is a focal point for the "locals." One goes to the pub for the same reasons one ud to go to church: for fellowship and spiritual enlightenment. There is nothing flashy or plastic about most pubs. Many look like one's living room, full of plush, soft chairs, couches, a fireplace, and bright lights. The pubs keep respectable hours, too-open from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. and 5 P.M. to 10 P.M.; Friday and Saturday nights they stay open until 11 P.M. There are no all-night or 3 A.M. public bars. When the pubs clo everyone goes home. The pub reprents pleasure with control and in good taste.
Due to the geography, history, culture and other reasons, every nation in the world formed their character that different form other nations. Britain is no expected. After veral years’ social change, they formed their own unique way of thinking and behavior and formed their unique qualities and characteristics. To sum up, the British characteristics are the following areas.
2. The English Character
2.1 The rerved person
To other Europeans, the best known quality of the British, and in particular of the English, is rerved. A rerved person is one who does not talk very much to strangers, do not show much emotion, and ldom gets excited. Most of the British have feelings do not expo the cold and silent character.
British generally don’t show their own inner world to others and this feature is very evident in the upper class of society. It is difficult to know a rerved person: he never tells you anything about himlf, and you may work with him for years without ever knowing where he lives, how many children he has, and what his interests are. English people tend to be like that.
This reluctance to communicate with others is an unfortunate quality in some ways, since it tends to give the impression of coldness, and it is true that the English are not noted for their generosity and hospitality. On the other hand, they are perfectly human behind their barrier of rerve, and may be quite plead when a friendly stranger or foreigner succeeds for a time in breaking the barrier down.
2.2The modesty person舞动的精灵
Cloly related to English rerve is English modesty. Within their hearts, the English are perhaps no less conceited than anybody el but in their relations with others they value at least a show of modesty. Self-prai is felt to be ill-bred. Britain has the world’s oldest modern public management system, excellent in centuries of fashion accumulation, the achievement of gentle gentlemen.
2.3 The humor person
The famous English n of humor is similar. Its starting-point is lf-deprecation, and its great enemy is conceit. Its ideal in the ability to laugh at onelf, at one’s own faults, one’s own failures and embarrassment, even at one’s own ideals. ” He has no n of humor “is very commonly heard in Britain, where humor is so highly prized. A n of humor is an attitude to life rather than the mere ability to laugh at jokes. This attitude is never cruel or disrespectful or malicious. The English do not laugh at a cripple or a madman, a tragedy or an honorable failure.
Since rerve, a show of modesty and a n of humor are part of his own nature, the typical Englishman tends to expect them in others. He cretly looks down on more excitable nations, and likes to think of himlf as more reliable than they. He doesn’t trust big promis and open shows of feelings, especially if they are expresd in flowery language. To though who are fond of the kinds of exaggeration, therefore the English-man may appear disconcertingly cold and skeptical, and they may be bewildered when his n of humor is aroud by airs of dignity and importance.
2.4 The sportsmanship person
Finally, sportsmanship. Like a n of humor, this is an English ideal which not all Englishmen live up to. It must be realized that sport in this modern form is almost entirely a British invention. Boxing, rugby, football, hockey, tennis and cricket were all first organized and given rules in Britain.
Rules are the esnce of sport, and sportsmanship is the ability to practice a sport according to its rules, while also showing generosity to one’s opponent and good temper in defeat. The high pressure of modern international sport makes the ideals difficult to keep, but they are at least highly valued in Britain and are certainly achieved there more commonly than among more excitable peoples.
Moreover, sportsmanship as an ideal is applied to life in general this is proved by the number of sporting terms ud in ordinary speech. One of the most elementary rules of life is “never hit a man when he’s down”. In other words, never take advantage of a person’s misfortune. English schoolboys often show this n of sportsmanship to a surprisingly high degree in their relations with each other.
2.5 The innovative person
There is another side to the English Character-the bizarre, the audacious, and the innovative. It was not the U.S. but conrvative England that produced the Beatles with their long hair and sounds that have influenced a decade of rock musicians and adolescents. Out of a very straight middle-class family comes the androgynous Mick Jigger of the Rolling Stones who very existence violates the rigid xual stereotypes of Western culture.
3. The Reasons
周年活动
Firstly, Britain is an island nation, the English Channel vered its links with other world and the British even do not think themlves as Europeans. Despite the geographical concept, we think that English is a part of Europe, but in fact, isolated geographic position that British and European thinking. "A parate island and its beauty, people feel connected insular," that connected the peculiar character in Britain, especially the characteristics of Conrvation is the main reason for the source. Secondly, the British are very proud of the history of their nation.
The British have a more long history other European countries, King James Authorized Version of the Bible and Shakespeare’s play had a tremendous impact on Western culture. UK Parliament is one of the Europe’s oldest parliament and the British is the first country completed Industrial Revolution in the world. England has had a glorious history and this feeling has become an indelible part of their personality. 1950 U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson once commented British embarrassment: "Britain lost an empire, but did not find a role." However, we can also find a balance in British manners though this political and international status is on the decline,
Special geographical location and unique history of civilization make the British formed the character.
Of cour, with the development of society and the deepening international exchanges, the British character and values change in subtle changes. But it does not affect the British gentleman style.
4. The Implications
By this study of British characters, we can know more about British culture and daily life. It is very helpful to people who will live or work with a foreigner. China's traditional culture is profound, British culture is also very interesting. If we know more about British characters and cultural, when we get along with them, we can avoid many problems. We can also learn the British politeness and improve our overall quality.
5. Conclusion
Through this paper, I have a better command of knowledge that I haven’t known previous and have a deeper understanding of British culture. It is an unforgettable experience for me to writing a paper. It not only widens my horizon but also rais my interest in English.
As far as I am concerned, it is of great significance for us to study English. As an international language, English is widely ud. Today, we must master the language if we are to communicate with foreigners and to participate in the fierce international competition in the future. In addition, studying English as a foreign language does not only provide us with a uful tool for communication but also open a door to cultures different from our own. As is universally acknowledged, mutual understanding among different cultures is vital for keeping the world safe and peaceful. So I will try my best to learn English.
