The clumsy performances help us e clearly the ugly. Twain was born in an eventful era in history, when the life of Americans changed a lot with the advent of the Civil War. Fierce conflicts exist between the South and the North, the black and the white, the poor and the rich, and the old and new way of life, etc. As a poor young man who wanted to make his American dream come true, Mark Twain tried a lot of jobs and finally obtained fame and fortune through his pen. He was a dual personality who sacrificed his individuality to achieve popularity, wearing the mask of "Mark Twain", a witty humorous man of letters. It
is always controversial how much the art fed into the life and how much the life fed the art. In the ca of Mark Twain, the life shaped his genius, which was approved of by De Voto. As a writer experiencing ri and fall in his life, Twain was interested in people's "lf' and identity. In Twain's novels, chronologically, the heroes experienced three stages in pursuing their identities, which are merging into society, fleeing from society and getting lost in society. Merging into society indicates progress and hope, with nobody's becoming somebody; fleeing from society marks the decline in the heroes' arching for an identity, with their doubting the world they are living in and trying to escape to find a better one; getting lost is the fall in one's lf pursuing, and the heroes cannot find a suitable identity in society for they cannot fit into it. The three stages are the reprentation of Twain's own life, embodying a shift from joy to despair, from dream to nightmare. The tool Mark Twain ud to explore one's identity and "lf ' is the mode of "twins", which displays Twain’s interest in "double" and "twins". As to the creation of fictions, besides exploring the theme, this kind of mode can help develop the plot and depict the characters. The mode of the "double", the twins, runs through his work and bec
omes one of the most remarkable characteristics of his novels. Through the depiction of such "twins" as Tom and Huck, Tom and Edward, Huck and Jim, Hank and King Arthur, Tom and Chambers, etc, Twain prents of lf pursuing and identity arching." The truth about Mark Twain," wrote H: L. Mencken in the Smart Set, "is that he was a colossus, that he stood head and shoulders above his country and his time, that even the combined of puritanism without and philistinism within could not trying him down to the national level." Thins that are most native are the things that are most international. As the father of American 1#erature, he contributed a lot to the world literature. As a "colossus", he has never ending attraction to critics all over the world, and is loved by people who speak different languages.
