Directions: There are veral passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). A lot of us have spent a lot of time trying to get low-income children interested in
middle-class values: education, hard work, an orientation (导向) toward the future. And none of it ems to work.
The real problem, I suspect, is the cur (诅咒) of low expectations. We doubt that most children who speak a certain way, or who come from certain kinds of homes and economic circumstances, will ever perform well in any tting that requires above-average intelligence. We doubt that the children will ever achieve middle-class status. We remind them in a thousand ways that we will be astonished if they ever amount to much, and we wonder why they keep succumbing (屈从) to drugs and crime and premature x.
The children of the poor don‟t try harder at the things that middle-class youngsters take for granted for the same reason I don‟t try harder to slam-dunk a basketball. We don‟t work very har d at things that we assume are beyond our ability to master.
But there is one group of minority Americans who work hard and who are successful --- the recently arrived Asian-Americans. There are two complicated things about the Asians. The first is that they e America as a land of great opportunity. The cond is they know that the key to success is hard work. They take as a given that anybody who works hard enough can achieve success.

Sugar is so much a part of our modern life that we only really think about it when, for some reason, we cannot obtain it. It has been known to man for at least 3,000 years, but has come into common u only in modern times. Until quite recently it was considered as a medicine and as a luxury for the very rich only.
Sugar is, then, very important to our civilization. But what exactly is it? Of cour, most of us recogni
ze sugar immediately as the sweet material which we put in coffee or cakes. This common form of sugar is derived from two plants: the sugarcane (a type of grass which grows to a height of twenty feet) and the sugar beet (which grows under ground). But there are in fact many types of sugar, and the chemist recognizes hundreds of different varieties, each coming from a different source.
About 90% of the sugar is produced as food. Only 10% is ud in industry for purpos other than food production. Yet sugar has great possibilities for u as the basis of chemicals. It can even be ud for making plastics. In the future the potential us will certainly be developed more than in the past.
There are many reasons why we should increa the production of sugar. Most important is that it is one of the most highly concentrated of energy foods. Thus sugarcane and sugar beet produce an average of 7,000,000 calories per acre. In this way they have the advantage over potatoes which give only 4,000,000, while the figure for wheat and beans is 2,000,000 each. So three acres of land growing wheat, beans and potatoes give only slightly more energy than one acre of sugar.

A startling finding of the rearch is that the abnt-minded activity is a hazard of doing things in which we are skilled. Normally, you would expect that skill reduces the number of errors we make. But trying to avoid silly slips by concentrating more could make things a lot wor -- even dangerous.
