A.
Alfred Wegener was a scientist in the early 1900s. He had a strange theory. His theory is that 250 million years ago there was one giant continent (洲). He called the giant continents as Pangaea. He thought Pangaea changed millions of years later. It started breaking up. The continent slowly drifted apart. They became continents we know today.
Wegener made many studies. He looked at world maps and thought that some continents were like puzzle pieces. They could fit together. He went to South America as well as Africa
He looked at mountains on both continents. They would match if the continents were pushed together. 余角和补角Wegener found similar fossils (化石) plants and animals on both continents.
Alfred Wegener called his theory “continental drift”. In 1912 he told other scientists about his theory. Most thought Wegener was crazy. They didn't believe huge pieces of land could move.
Later卖字画 other scientists did more studies. They discovered that continents are actually moving all the time. Scientists know that the surface of Earth is not one piece. They think it's broken into large pieces of hard rock called tectonic plates Scientists believe there are 30 tectonic plates on Earth and the continents lie on top of them.
Under Earth's surface is the mantle ( 地幔). The mantle is a layer ( 层) of rock about 2900 km thick. The temperature ris to 3 700C at the bottom of the mantle. The heat caus the mantle to become hot molten (熔化的) rock which flows around.
The tectonic plates float like rafts on top of the hot molten rock but they move very slowly-only about 4 inches (10 cm) each year. Since continents lie on top of the tectonic plates巴卫壁纸 they also float or move.
Today scientists know the continents are still moving. Alfred Wegener's theory was proved correct.

根据Alfred Wegener called his theory “continental drift”,可知,这个理
He went to South America as well as Africa. He looked at mountains on both continents. They would match if the continents were pushed together“他去了南美洲和南非。他看着这两个大陆上的山脉。如果大陆被挤在一起,他们就会匹配”,可知,他去了南美洲和南非寻找线索来证明他的理论。故选D。
53. 细节理解题。根据In 1912 he told other scientists about his theory.
The tectonic plates float like rafts on top of the hot…Since continents lie on top of the tectonic plates they also float or move,可知,地壳板块像木筏一样漂浮在炙热的岩石上,科学家认为大陆依赖于地壳板块,所以大陆也浮动或移动。故选D。

I think there are veral reasons that suggest developing robots is a waste of money.
In San Diego recently $325000 was spent on inventing a robotic squirrel to do some scientific experiments. The rearch proved that squirrels are able to scare away snakes by wagging (摇动) their tails. Do you need a robotic squirrel to work this out?
What about AIBO a robotic pet developed in Japan? In Japane aibou means "buddy"崔可夫. The pets have been developed at huge cost mainly to provide entertainment. They've been ud in movies and music videos. Universities have ud them for educational purpos. However in 2006 the company stopped producing the robotic pets in order to save money. Was it worth a lot of money?
Then there's NAO a robot which has been developed by a French company. Its main purpo is to make life easier for humans. It speaks 19 languages and has its own personality. It can tell children a story help in the classroom or the home or act as a companion to tho people who need someone to be with. A fully developed one costs $16000. Is that value for money? Who can afford it anyway?
