The bathtub was a wash tub(澡盆)filled with water from the stove. If you were small enough you could sit down by drawing your knees to your chest. Otherwi, you washed yourlf standing up. Often all the women and girls in the family bathed together. Then the men and boys did. In most families this was Saturday night becau Sundays they went to church.
A small number of families did have running water. But that depended on whether there was a water system where they lived and on whether they could afford the plumbing(水管设施). Some people had bathtubs in their homes as early as 1895. But many others did not have their first bath in a bathtub until 1910 or later when they were fifteen or sixteen years old.

Passage 2
When we think of creative people the names that probably spring to mind are tho of men such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Pablo Picasso, i.e. great artists, inventors and scientists—a lected and exceptionally gifted body of men with rare talent and genius. The tendency to regard creativity and imaginative thinking as the exclusive of a lucky few disregards the creative and imaginative aspects inherent in the solution of many of the tasks we regularly have to face ─the discovery and development of new methods and techniques, the improvement of old methods, existing inventions and products.
Everyone has creative ability to some extent. Creative thinking involves posing onelf a problem and then originating or inventing a solution along new and unconventional lines. It involves drawing new analogies, discovering new combinations, and/ or new applications of things that are already known. It follows, then, that a creative person will exhibit great intellectual curiosity and imagination. He will be alert obrvant with a great store of information which he will be able to sort and combine, in the solution of problem. He will be emotionally receptive to new and unconventional ideas and will be less interested in facts than in their implication. Most important of all, he will be able to communicate uninhibitedly and will not be too concerned about other people’s reaction to his apparently “crazy” notion s. People called the Wright brothers mad but it did not stop them from becoming the first men to construct and fly a heavier-than-air craft.

The great advance in rocket theory 40 years ago showed that liquid-fuel rockets were far superior in every respect to the skyrocket with its weak solid fuel, the only
kind of rocket then known. However, during the last decade, large solid-fuel rockets with solid fuels about as powerful as liquid fuels have made their appearance, and it is a favorite layman’s (门外汉的) question to inquire which one is “better”. The question is meaningless; one might as well ask whether a gasoline or diel engine is “better”. It all depends on the purpo. A liquid-fuel rocket is complicated, but has the advantage that it can be controlled beautifully. The burning of the rocket engine can be stopped completely: it can be reignited when desired. In addition, the thrust can be made to vary by adjusting the speed of the fuel pumps. A solid-fuel rocket, on the other hand, is rather simple in construction, though hard to build when a really large size is desired. But once you have a solid-fuel rocket, it is ready for action at very short notice. A liquid-fuel rocket has to be fueled first and cannot be held in readiness for very long after it has been fueled. However, once a solid-fue
l rocket has been reignited, it will keep burning. It cannot be stopped and reignited whenever desired (it could conceivably be stopped and reignited after a pre-calculated time of burning has elapd) and its thrust cannot be varied. Becau a solid-fuel rocket can be kept ready for a long time, most military missiles employ solid fuels, but manned space flight needs the fine adjustments that can only be provided by liquid fuels. It may be added that a liquid-fuel rocket is an expensive device; a large solid-fuel rocket is, by comparison, cheap. But the solid fuel, pound by pound, cost about 10 times as much as the liquid fuel. So you have, on the one hand, an expensive rocket with a cheap fuel and on the other hand a comparatively cheap rocket with an expensive fuel.
11. The author feels that a comparison of liquid-fuel rockets and solid-fuel rockets
shows that __________
A. neither type is very economical
B. the liquid-fuel rocket is better
C. each type has certain advantages
D. the solid-fuel rocket is better

rockets?
A. The fuel is cheap.
B. They can be stopped and reignited.
C. They are cheap to build.
D. They must be ud soon after fueling.
14. When a liquid-fuel rocket is ud, the burning of the rocket engine __________.
A. cannot be controlled easily
B. will keep burning
C. cannot be stopped
D. can be stopped completely
15. Which of the following statements is true?
A. A solid-fuel rocket is more complicated in construction than a liquid-fuel one.
B. A solid-fuel rocket is simpler in construction than a liquid-fuel one.
C. A liquid-fuel rocket is an expensive device with an expensive fuel.
D. A solid-fuel rocket is a cheap device with a cheap fuel.
