Teaching objectives
After studying this unit, the students are able to master the key words and structures, and more importantly, to communicate for the following purpos:
understanding business meals and western table manners
understanding a western food menu
learning the background and characteristics of Chine food culture in different regions
cultivating and strengthening the awareness of cultural confidence
introducing a restaurant and its foods to a client
understanding and writing an invitation in English

Teaching procedures
This unit is arranged for a time span of 9 hours, during which a time limit is suggested for each step. A teacher should never stick to a rigid time plan in teaching, but rather deal with teaching materials more flexibly. Choo the appropriate teaching materials and make necessary adjustments in accordance with students' language proficiency and learning situation.
Note that not every step or hour arrangement suggested here is a must in teaching. Mini-project and Self-study Room can be arranged in a flexible way bad on the actual teaching schedule. A teacher can make whatever changes he/she thinks necessary.

The main difference between Chine and Western eating habits is that in the West everyone has their own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated by a Chine host, he will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes. The Chine are very proud of their food culture, and will do their best to show their hospitality.
The meal usually begins with a t of at least four cold dishes, to be followed by the main cours of hot meat and vegetable dishes. Soup then will be rved, followed by staple food ranging from rice, noodles to dumplings.
Small pieces of food are favored by Chine people. Usually Chine people will cut the food into small pieces. It’s more convenient for them to pick up with chopsticks, without cutting the food on the table. As Western people u knives and forks, portions tend to be much bigger when it comes to Western food.

Objective: Ss can role play a dialogue between a Chine company and its foreign clients, introduce the Chine dishes and have small with the foreign clients.
Steps:
• Grouping. Divide the class into groups. There are veral ways: Ss pick their own partners; Teacher groups fast learners with slow learners; Ss find their partners by drawing lots.
• Defining the project. Go through the project with the class and clarify requirements. You are advid to do it after Ss study Reading A.
• Timing & cooperation. Give Ss the deadline for completion and guidelines on working together. Remind them that different Ss have different work but everybody should contribute to the project. They discuss first and then decide who will do what.
• Co-working.
1) Ss acting as the host read the menu and introduce some of the dishes.
2) Ss acting as the clients have meals, comment on the food and rai questions on the dishes.
3) Ss acting as the host and the clients have small talks.
4) Ss acting as a waiter or waitress take orders and offer rvices.
5) Ask two or three groups to prent their conversations to the class.
6) Invite other groups to give comments.
     
Self-study Room                                            20    minutes
Self-study Room is designed for students to learn the grammar by themlves and the teacher to give instructions on some difficult and complicated grammar. In this unit, Self-study Room is about Passive Voice. If time permits, the teacher can organize students to learn this grammar in the class and finish the task 1-3.
