Murakami was born in Kyoto in 1949 but spent most of his youth in Kobe. His father was the son of a Buddhist priest; his mother was the daughter of an Osaka merchant. Both taught Japane literature.
Since childhood, Murakami has been heavily influenced by Western culture, particularly Western music and literature. He grew up reading a range of works by American writers such as Kurt V onnegut and Richard Brautigan, and he is often distinguished from other Japane writers for his Western influences.

Murakami studied theater arts at Wada University in Tokyo, where he met his wife, Y oko. His first job was in a record store, which is where one of his main characters, Toru Watanabe from Norwegian Wood, works. Shortly before finishing his studies, Murakami opened the jazz bar "Peter Cat" in Tokyo, which he ran from 1974 until 1982. Many of his novels have musical themes and titles referring to classical music for example, the three books consisting The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle: The Thieving Magpie (after Rossini's orchestral overture), Bird as Prophet (after a piano piece by Robert Schumann), and The Bird-Catcher (a protagonist in Mozart's opera The Magic Flute). Some of his novels are named after songs: Dance, Dance, Dance (from The Steve Miller Band), Norwegian Wood (
after the Beatles' song) and South of the Border, West of the Sun (the first part being the title of a song by Nat King Cole).
Murakami is a keen marathon runner and triathlete, although he did not start running until he was 33 years old. On June 23, 1996, he completed his first ultramarathon, a 100-kilometer race around Lake Saroma in Hokkaido, Japan.[13] He discuss his relationship with running in his 2008 work What I Talk About When I Talk About Running.[14]
His first novel is 《Hear the Wind Sing》,which was the beginning of his road of literature. 《Hear the Wind Sing》help him achieved the best new artist prize in 1979.
肝腹水晚期>文化作文Murakami began to write when he was 29. In the past ven years, he wanted to write something but finally wrote nothing. The intention of 《Hear the Wind Sing》is the moment when he watched John David Hilton(an athlete of baball)hit a double in a baball game. Murakami said it is a chance that something unusual in his heart has been touched.
Murakami's initial success with 《Hear the Wind Sing》encouraged him to continue writing. A year later, he published 《Pinball》, 1973, a quel. In 1982, he published《A Wild Sheep Cha》, a critical success. Hear the Wind Sing, Pinball, 1973, and A Wild Sheep Cha form the "Trilogy of the
Rat" (a quel, Dance, Dance, Dance, was written later but is not considered part of the ries), centered on the same unnamed narrator and his friend, "the Rat". The first two novels are unpublished in English translation outside of Japan, where an English edition with extensive translation notes was published as part of a ries intended for English students. Murakami considers his first two novels to be "weak," and was not eager to have them translated into English.[18] A Wild Sheep Cha was "The first book where I could feel a kind of nsation, the joy of telling a story. When you read a good story, you just keep reading. When I write a good story, I just keep writing."
