重庆县2. Caroline, or Sister Carrie, as she had been half affectionately termed by the family, was possd of a mind rudimentary in its power of obrvation and analysis. Self-interest with her was high, but not strong. It was, nevertheless, her guiding characteristic. Warm with the fancies of youth, pretty with the insipid prettiness of the formative period, possd of a figure promising eventual shapeliness and an eye alight with certain native intelligence, she was a fair example of the middle American class--two generations removed from the emigrant. Books were beyond her interest--knowledge a aled book. In the intuitive graces she was still crude. She could scarcely toss her head gracefully. Her hands were almost ineffectual. The feet, though small, were t flatly. And yet she was interested in her charms, quick to understand the keener pleasures of life, ambitious to gain in material things. A half-equipped little knight she was, venturing to reconnoitre the mysterious city and dreaming wild dreams of some vague, far-off supremacy, which should make it prey and subject--the proper penitent, grovelling at a woman's slipper.
3. To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society. I am not solitary whilst I read and write, though nobody is with me. But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars. The rays that come from tho heavenly worlds, will parate between him and what he touches. One might think the atmosphere was made transparent with this design, to give man, in the heavenly bodies, the perpetual prence of the sublime. Seen in the streets of cities, how great they are! If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and prerve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown! But every night come out the envoys of beauty, and light the univer with their admonishing smile.
V. Choo ONE poem from the list below, and make a comment on the theme of it in about 100 words (U at least three of the following elements develop and reinforce your analysis: diction, tone, image, figure of speech, symbols, irony, syntax, rhythm and meter, rhyme).10%
1. The River-Merchant's Wife: A Letter
By Ezra Pound(1885-1972)
2 页,共 5
While my hair was still cut straight across my forehead
I played about the front gate, pulling flowers.
You came by on bamboo stilts, playing hor,
You walked about my at, playing with blue plums.
And we went on living in the village of Chokan:
Two small people, without dislike or suspicion.
At fourteen I married My Lord you.
I never laughed, being bashful.
Lowering my head, I looked at the wall.
Called to, a thousand times, I never looked back.
At fifteen I stopped scowling,
徒善不足以为政I desired my dust to be mingled with yours
Forever and forever and forever.
Why should I climb the look out?
At sixteen you departed,
You went into far Ku-to-yen, by the river of swirling eddies,
And you have been gone five months.
The monkeys make sorrowful noi overhead.
You dragged your feet when you went out.
By the gate now, the moss is grown, the different moss,
Too deep to clear them away!
The leaves fall early this autumn, in wind.
The paired butterflies are already yellow with August
Over the grass in the West garden;
They hurt me.  I grow older.
If you are coming down through the narrows of the river Kiang,
感恩生命中有你Plea let me know beforehand,
And I will come out to meet you
  As far as Cho-fu-Sa.
2. On His Blindness
By John Milton (1608-1674)
When I consider how my light is spent
Ere half my days in this dark world and wide,
And that one talent which is death to hide
Lodg'd with me uless, though my soul more bent
To rve therewith my Maker, and prent
My true account, lest he returning chide,
"Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?"
I fondly ask. But Patience, to prevent
That murmur, soon replies: "God doth not need
Either man's work or his own gifts: who best
Bear his mild yoke, they rve him best. His state
Is kingly; thousands at his bidding speed
And post o'er land and ocean without rest:
They also rve who only stand and wait."
