21.(6分)Generally speaking, government regulations normally ban anything from smoking in public places to parking in certain zones. But officials in the Brazilian town of Biritiba Mirim, 70km (45miles) east of Sao Paulo, have gone far beyond that. They plan to prohibit residents from dying early becau the local cemetery(墓地) has reached full capacity.
There’s no more room to bury the dead, they can’t be cremated(火化) and laws forbid a new cemetery. So the mayor has propod a strange solution: outlaw death. Mayor Roberto Pereira says the bill is meant as a protest against federal regulations that prohibit new or expanded cemeteries in prervation areas. “They have not taken local demands into con sideration”, he claims.
A 2003 decree(法令) by Brazil’s National Environment Council forbids burial grounds in protected areas. Mr. Pereira wants to build a new cemetery, but the project has been stopped becau 98% of Biritiba Mirim is considered as a prervation area.
Biritiba Mirim, a town of 28,000 inhabitants, not only wants to prohibit residents from passing away. The bill also calls on people to take care of their health in order to avoid death. “I haven’t got a job, nor am I healthy. And now they say I can’t die. That’s ridiculous,” Amarido do Prado, an unemployed resident said.
The city council is expected to vote on the regulation next week. “Of cour the bill is laughable, illegal, and will never be approved,” said Gilson Soares de Campos, an assistant of the mayor. “But can you think of a better resolution to persuade the government to change the environmental decree that is prohibiting us from building a new cemetery?” The bill states that “offenders will be held responsible for their acts.” Howe ver, it does not say what the punishment will be.

22.(8分)A dragonfly barely an inch and a half long appears to be animal world’s most productive long distance traveler - flying thousands of miles over oceans as it migrates from continent to continent - according to a newly published rearch.
Biologists who led the study say the evidence is in the genes. They found that populations of this dragonfly, called Pantala flavescens, in Texas, eastern Canada, Japan, Korea, India, and South America, have genes so similar that there is only one likely explanation. Apparently — somehow — the incts are traveling distances that are extraordinarily long for their small size, breeding (繁殖) with each other, and creating a common worldwide gene pool.
But how do incts from different continents manage to meet and hook up? Ware says it appears to be the way their bodies have evolved. “The dragonflie s have adaptations such as incread surface areas on their wings that enable them to u the wind to carry them.”
Dragonflies, in fact, have already been obrved crossing the Indian Ocean from Asia to Africa. “They are following the weather,” says Daniel Troast, who analyzed the DNA samples in Ware’s lab. “They’re going from India where it’s dry ason to Africa where it’s wet ason, and apparently they do it once a year.”

Wetness is a must for Pantala to reproduce, and that, says Ware, is why the incts would be driven to even attempt such a dangerous trip, which she calls a “kind of suicide.” The species depends on it. While many will die on the route, as long as enough make it, the species survives.
For the moment, the details of this extraordinary inct travel are an educated best guess. Much more work is needed to bring many loo ends together. Ware and Troast hope that scientists can work on plotting tho routes.

23.(8分)We’re often being t old how lf-driving can will reward US With almost unimaginable benefits when they finally hit the streets. Aside from the convenience of being chauffeured (私人司机) everywhere by artificial intelligence ( AI), there’s the safety factor, not to mention how e nvironme
ntally friendly driver-less electric vehicles could be. But there’s also another advantage—parking. It’s one that could have a vast impact on the look, feel, and function of the cities, and it could thoroughly change the crowded urban spaces.
“We aren’t going to need parking, definitely not in the places we have it now,” Alain L. Komhaur, a rearcher at Princeton University, told Patrick Sisson at Curbed. “Having parking clo to where people spend time is going to be a thing of the past. If I’m at the office, it doesn’t need to be there.” The extreme ca of totally empty car parks and city streets with no stationary (静止的) vehicles would probably require people to fully let go of personal car ownership.
“Car sharing is already reducing the need for parking spaces,” Carlo Ratti told Curbed. “Self-driving vehicles will strengthen this trend and have a dramatic effect on urban life, becau they will blur (使模糊) the distinction between private and public modes of transportation,” he added. “‘Your’car could give you a lift to work in the morning and then, rather than sitting uless in a parking lot, give a lift to someone el in your neighbourhood,social-media community, or city.”
In that ca, we needn’t park our cars. They’ll park by themlves, so we would e a huge increa in the width of sidewalks, bike lanes, and space for any other kind of transportation.
考研多少钱In all likelihood, we won’t e the kinds of changes happening very soon. But it’s exciting to think of the benefits this technology could bring.张岱简介
