V. Proofreading: (10 points)
There is a mistake in each line except the last one. Find it out and correct it.
Let us suppo that you are in the position of parent. Would you allow your children to read whatever any book they wanted to without first checking its contents? Would you take your children to e a film without first finding out whether it is suited to them? If your answer to the questions is “yes,” you are just unresponsible. If your answer is “no,” you are exercising your right as a paren t to protect your children from that you consider to be undesirable influences. In other words, by acting like an examiner yourlf, you are acknowledging that there is a strong ca for censorship (审查). Of cour you will say that it is one thing to exerci censorship children are concerned and quite other to do the same for adults. Children need protection and it is the parents’ responsibility to provide for it. But what about adults? Aren’t they old enough to decide what is good for them?
VI. Inrt one word in each line and make the passage a meaningful whole: (10 points)
Every leads a triple life: it is read, written and spoken. Most people recognize
and understand many more words in reading than they u in ordinary, and about three times as many as occur in spontaneous speech. This is we occasionally stumble when speaking words that part of our reading or writing vocabularies. At other times, we may mispronounce the most commonplace words out habit.
The problem is that we usually don’t know when we are a word; otherwi we say it correctly. If we are lucky, we learn the right pronunciation by hearing someone el say the word properly or by someone gently us in private. If we are unlucky, we mispronounce the word in front of a roomful of people, may rai their eyebrows, groan, or laugh. Even experienced speakers sometimes fall this trap.
All of this argues for practicing your speech in front of as trusted friends and relatives as you can asmble. If you have any doubts about the proper of certain words, be sure to check dictionary.
There are, of cour, regional and ethnic dialects that pronunciation. Some nonstandard pronunciations are perfectly to some audiences. In New Y ork people may get “idears”about “dee-ah” friends. In Alabama tell their children to clean up their rooms “rat now.” In Utah people prai the “lard(猪油)” and the “lord” in the refrigerator. Such dialects are fine as long your audience does not find them objectionable or confusing. Otherwi, you should try to them, for they may cau listeners to make negative judgments about.
VII. Read the following passage and translate the underlined ntences into Chine: (10 points)
Whether work should be placed among the caus of happiness or among the caus of unhappine
ss may perhaps be regarded as a doubtful question. There is
certainly much work which is exceedingly troublesome, and an excess of work is
always very painful. I think, however, that, provided work is not excessive in amount,
even the dullest work is to most people less painful than idleness. 1There are in work all grades, from mere relief of tediousness up to the profoundest delights,
according to the nature of the work and the abilities of the worker. Most of the
work that most people have to do is not in itlf interesting, but even such work has
certain great advantages. To begin with, it fills a good many hours of the day without
the need of deciding what one shall do. 2Most people, when they are left free to fill their own time according to their own choice, are at a loss to think of anything
sufficiently pleasant to be worth doing. And whatever they decide on, they are
troubled by the feeling that something el would have been pleasanter. To be able to
fill leisure intelligently is the last product of civilization, and at prent very few
people have reached this level. Moreover the exerci of choice is in itlf tiresome. 3Except to people with unusual initiative it is positively agreeable to be told what to do at each hour of the day, provided the orders are not too unpleasant.4Most
of the idle rich suffer unspeakable boredom as the price of their freedom from
厨房机drudgery. At times, they may find relief by hunting big game in Africa, or by flying
round the world, but the number of such nsations is limited, especially after youth is past. 5Accordingly the more intelligent rich men work nearly as hard as if they were poor, while rich women for the most part keep themlves busy with innumerable trifles of who earthshaking importance they are firmly persuaded.
tedious–boring, tiring, and continuing for a long time
profound–showing strong, rious feelings
initiative– the ability to make decisions and take action without waiting for someone
to tell you what to do
idle–(of people or machines) doing nothing, not working or operating
drudgery –hard boring work
trifle –(old-fashioned) something unimportant or not valuable
