Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake capitals of the world---Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey---rats will soon be man's new best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We nt in rescue dogs. Why? Becau they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big
and they can't get into small spaces. So now a new rearch project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal(信号). This is nt to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow
the radio signals. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots' nos don't work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that. “Rats can also e in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!
The "rat project" is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, "It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn't get to and a rat would
get out if it wasn't safe ". Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to e a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of cour).

According to a 2014 poll(民意调查) by the National Sleep Foundation, nearly 4 in 5 Ameri
cans don't get as much sleep as they should during the workweek. On average, adults are thought to need at least eight hours of sleep a night, although some can manage with less and some won't do well without more. But the survey found that, on workdays, only 21% of Americans actually get a full eight hours of sleep, and another 21% get less than six.
To many of us, the thought of spending more time sleeping is, well, a big yawn. On the other hand, the thought of being smarter, thinner, healthier and more cheerful has a certain appeal. And tho are just a few of the advantages that can be ours if we consistently get enough sleep, rearchers say. Also on the plus side: We're Likely to have better skin, better memories better judgment, and, oh, yes, longer lives.
"When you lo even one hour of sleep for any reason, it influences your performance the next day, " said Dr Alon Avidan, director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center.
A study published last year found the same to be true even of children. When kids aged 8 t0 12 slept for just one hour less for four nights, they didn't function as well during the day.游山西村的诗意
