I. Introduction to the book, “Daddy-Long-Legs:”
Written by Jean Webster in 1912, it tells the story of an orphan by the name of Jerusha Abbot. She spends her entire young life in an orphanage and works there in exchange of her “free” high school education until the day she is finally nt out to college by a generous trustee, who name is kept unknown. Jerusha address him as “Laddy-Long-Legs” and is required to write him letters regularly so as to keep the trustee updated about her college studies and life.

Alice Jane Chandler Webster, who pen name is Jean, was born in New York in 1876 and died of childbirth fever at the age of 40 in 1916. Her mother was niece of Mark Twain, and her father ran a publishing business. Her education at schools inspired her to write fictional novels. One the most famous book is Daddy-Long-Legs, which receives popularity becau of her witty style.
