What will astronauts(宇航员)eat when a space trip takes years?
“Lots of fresh vegetables,” says Dr. Janet Williams, who team have spent the last 10 years learning how to grow plants in a space station. And it’s a good thing that she has already started her work, becau space gardening can be really hard.
As usual, astronaut George White looked into the clod plant room. He had planted Dr. Williams’s quick-growing edlings in it, but none of the stems were showing. He opened the room to check and found the problem. The stems weren’t growing upward and the roots weren't growing downward. On Earth, gravity(重力)helps a plant’s stems and roots to find “up”and “down”. However, in the space station, there was almost no gravity.
Dr. Williams suggested a solution: give the plants more light, as plants also u sunlight to find their way. And it worked. When the plants had more light, the stems turned up and the roots went down.

Many scientists believe our love of sugar may be an addiction (瘾). When we eat or drink sugary food, the sugar enters our blood and influences parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All delicious food do this, but sugar has a specially strong effect.
"It ems like every time I study an illness and trace a path to the first cau, I find my way back to sugar," says scientist Richard Johnson. One-third of adults in the world have high blood pressure and up to 347 million have too much sugar in their blood. Why? "Sugar, we believe, is one of the culprits, if not the main culprit," says Johnson.
Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very good at storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us.
So what is the solution? It’s easy to e that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today's world, it's very difficult to avoid. More and more foods are filled with it. Some prod
ucers even u sugar to replace taste in foods that are advertid as low in fat. This may make the food appear as healthier, but large amount of sugar are often added.
But there are tho who are fighting back against sugar. Many schools are replacing sugary desrts with healthier food like fruit. Other schools are growing their own food in gardens, or building places for students and others in the community to exerci. The battle has not yet been lost.
