The administrative status of Shennongjia is rather unique, in that it is the only county-level administrative unit of the People's Republic of China that is designated a "forestry district" r
ather than a more usual county or county-level city. Shennongjia is a county-level unit directly administered by the provincial government as oppod to be part of a prefecture-level city or prefecture. The district was created in 1970 with Badong County, Xingshan County, and Fang County as the adjacent areas.
Geography

Shennongjia is the only green area well prerved not only in the inland of China but also in the middle latitude zone of the world. Natural Resources
There are rich mineral deposits in Shennongjia for its favorable conditions. The main minerals are phosphate, iron ore, copper ore, magnesium ore, lead and zinc, silicon ore etc. On the other hand, it is showed that the theoretical rerves of hydropower resources in Shennongjia is 57 million kilowatts, in which 124,500 kilowatts has been developed, 101,000 kilowatts are being developed.

The main north-south route throughout the district is China National Highway 209 (G209),
which, however, is still "unimproved" in many places both within district (north of the national park entry at Yazikou) and in Badong County south of it. Hubei Provincial Route 307 (S307) runs through the northeastern part of the district, from G209 east to Songbai Town and on into the neighboring Baokang County (part of Xiangyang prefecture-level city). Due to the mountainous terrain, the district has no rail or water transport. However, construction of Shennongjia Airport started in April 2011 with an investment of 1 billion yuan.
