Many studies have shown that teenagers who have no friends often suffer from psychological disorders. It has been shown that teenagers, perhaps more than any other age group, need companionship and a n of belonging. The
negative conquences of loneliness have also been obrved among the elderly. The death of a spou often leaves a widow or a widower totally bereft. If, however, they are surrounded by friends and relatives and if they are able to express their feelings, they are more likely to recover from their grief.
“No man is an island.” In other words, we are all parts of society. We all need the love, admiration, respect and moral support of other people. If we are fortunate, our friends will provide us with all of the necessary aspects of life.
As most people obrve, there are many levels of friendship. The degree or intensity of friendship varies depending on the personality of the individuals involved and the context of the relationships. Outgoing persons enjoy being surrounded by many people whereas shy persons are perhaps conte
nt with fewer but more inten friendships.
Everyone is not equally open with all their friends. The degree of cloness is determined by many factors. Clo friends can be formed at any stage in one’s life but they are usually very rare. Not very many people have more than a few really clo friends. Regardless of the level of cloness, all friendships are bad on reciprocity (互惠), honesty and
a certain amount of love and affection.

22.(8分) A member of our class told us of a request made by his wife. She and a group of other women in her
church were involved in a lf-improvement program. She asked her husband to help her by listing six things he believed she could do to help her become a better wife. He reported to the class," I was surprid by such a request. Frankly, it would have been easy for me to list six things I would like to change about her—my heavens, she could have listed a thousand things she would like to change about me—but I didn’t. I said to her, ‘Let me think about it and give you an answer in the morning.’”
“The next morning I got up very early and called the florist (花商) and had him nd six red ros to my wife with a note saying, ‘I can’t think of six things I would like to change about you. I love you the way you are.
“When I arrived at home that evening, who do you think greeted me at the door? That’s right. My wife! She was almost in tears. Needless to say, I was extremely glad I had not criticized her as she had requested. ”
“The following Sunday at church, after she had reported the result of her assignment, veral women with whom she had been studying came up to me and said, ‘That is the most considerate thing I have ever heard.’ It was then that I realized the power of appreciation.”
Lincoln once began a letter saying, “Everybody likes a compliment (赞扬).” William James said, “The deepest principle in human nature is the desire to be appreciated.” So, let’s give honest, sincere appreciation to others instead of criticizing them.
